July 2011 Moms

What is your 2 month old's sleep schedule?

How are your kiddos doing with naps? Mine seems to get all her sleep in half of the day, and awake for the other half (none of which coincide with DD#1's nap)

LO turned 2 months on Sunday

Sleeps from 9pm to 6am, nurses and gets formula , then sleeps to 10/11am-ish. She's up from then on, maybe gets a 30-45 minute nap around 4ish.  I try a few times to get her to nap in the early PM, but doesn't always work. I try to go off her cues (yawning, etc), but doesn't always work.

Loving the long stretch of sleep she is getting, but hey, if we can get a good afternoon nap instead of all morning, that would be great too! :)

Re: What is your 2 month old's sleep schedule?

  • it's not really a schedule, but on her best days, DD usually wakes up between 7 and 8, eats, diaper change, and is up for only 45mins-1 hour, then back to sleep for her longest nap of the day (1.5-2 hours), then she's up, she nurses, we change diaper, clothes and play for around 1-1.5 hours, then back to sleep for around an hour.

The afternoon is where it gets sketchy.  She clearly needs to nap around 3pm, but usually fights me until about 3:30 or later.  That one is usually a shorter nap of around 45 minutes, then up again to play some more.  around 5:30 I try to get her to sleep for a bit so she's rested when DH gets home to do bath and her wind-down playing (sometimes a book, sometimes just sitting in the glider talking) and then bed between 7 and 8.

If it helps, I've read that at this age their maximum awake time is usually around 2 hours at the most.

  • down for the night between 9 and 10pm, up for feedings at 2am, 5:30am and 8am. Then sleeps until 11ish, up until 6pm then semi napping until bed.
  • Down for the night around 11ish...sleeps until anywhere from 6:30-8am...nurses, then usually goes back to sleep until 10:30 am or so. Then she is usually awake until about 2pm, naps for a good 3 hours, stays awake for a little longer, then has at least one more good nap and quite a few cat naps. We're blessed with a really great sleeper.

  • DS goes down between 8-10pm and sleeps until 6:30-8:30.  He is usually up for about an hour or so and then naps the rest of the morning.  He is pretty much awake for the rest of the day with a short cat nap every 1.5-2 hours.  I'd love him to get a good nap in the afternoon too but it seems like he would rather sleep the morning away!

  • Up by 8 usually. Bottle, dressed, watch me get DD1 breakfast and wash bottles from her bouncy, then often naps in her swing while DD1 is at preschool. Bottle after nap, play for awhile, then often falls asleep in the car sometime around 1 when preschool pick up is. Then down for the night lately around 9:30/10. Usually sttn but there's always the occasional midnight or 4am bottle. I have a heck of a time getting her to nap w/o the swing or car.

  • Up around 8 or 9, naps around 10 for anywhere from 30 minutes - 2 1/2 hours. Up for about 1-2 hours then down again, for maybe 30 min to an hour and a half. Up for another 1-2 hours than a shorter nap around supper. Bath at 7 or 7:30 with Dad, lotion, jammies and boob til she falls asleep, usually around 8:30. Sleeps til 2 or 3am, nurses, back to sleep til 5 or 6 then nurses, back to sleep til 8 or 9.

  • He's not so great with naps.

He gets up for the day around 6 or 7.  I can sometimes get a nap out of him around 9 or 10, for 30-45 minutes.  He takes cat naps throughout the day, but rarely long ones.  Sometimes he'll take a long nap right around lunchtime, but it's rare.

He goes to bed for the night around 8 and wakes up to eat at 11, 2, 5 and then (as I said before) is up for the day at 6 or 7.

  • OK, this post  makes me want to cry.  My son is seven weeks and is up ALL night every night.  He is breastfed, so he eats every two hours (sometimes one hour) and there is no way to get him down between feedings.  I usually walk the floors all night while he stares at me w eyes wide open.  I've tried rocking, swaddling, putting him in my bed.

During the day he naps on and off between feedings every two hours...no real schedule.

Please share how you got you baby in a routine. Pleeease.

  • Joogle, I don't think you can really schedule a 2 month old.  They are going to eat and sleep when they need to.  Your guy is probably still going through his growth spurt and on the other side of that he may eat less frequently and give you longer stretches of sleep.

Mine was 7 weeks yesterday and while she now doesn't need to nurse in the middle of the night she is up with gas for about 2 hours, which apparently is commen for 6-8 week olds.

Just hang in there and he will naturally stretch out his feedings.  I am sure you are exhausted right now :(

This. My LO has always been up every 2.5-3 hours, but last Thursday (at 8 weeks) he gave me a 6 hour stretch of sleep, and last night it happened again. Prior to that, the longest stretch was 4 hours, and that was only once or twice. I am keeping faith that this will start happening more and more frequently as he gets older. Also, I find I'm doing well on far less sleep than I used to require. I am taking my full 12 weeks of maternity leave, though, mostly because of the sleep issue.

As for being awake at night, do you make sure not to talk to him or stimulate him at night? Have you tried swaddling and white noise? What happens when you put him down in his crib? How are his sleep habits during the day?

  • LO is up for day between 7-8 am. He is up for an hour or hour and a half max, and sleeps for 45 minutes to an hour and a half.  When he wakes up from a nap, he eats, we change diaper and play until he gets tired again. This routine repeats all day until about 6-7pm, when he starts getting fussy but fighting sleep. We do a walk and a bath, listen to music and bop him around a bit until he falls asleep between 8 and 9, he nurses once between 2 and 4, and may nurse around 6am if he nursed closer to 2, but then usually goes back down until 8 or a bit later in that case.  He fell into this routine naturally.

  • Mason really varies day to day. He goes down pretty late. He sleeps from 11- 6am then goes back down til 8:30. Then he takes 30 minute naps every two hours. He does take long naps around 7pm but they are only about a hour long.

  • Up at 7:30 get diaper and clothes changed and off to the babysitter we go. She gets a bottle there around 8:30. Around 9 or 9:30 she takes another nap for about 45 minutes eat again around noon then naps after she finishes her bottle until around 2 or 3 and then gets another bottle. I pick her up around 4 and home we go. Takes another nap from 5-6ish. we play and she eats again around 6ish or 7ish. Naps again from 9-10:30 and get her last bottle and then she is out for the night. Repeat for the next day.

  • The last couple of days he has slept all day.  He falls right back asleep on my shoulder right after his feedings.  Then he's up from 11pm-7am, so I need to flip that around.  I just don't know if I should keep him up one day from 6pm until 11pm or so, bc there is going to be hell to pay once he's up for more than 2 hours.

  • I would try and keep him up maybe from 8-10 pm or so and then start the process of trying to get him to sleep, maybe go for a short walk or car ride, give him a bath etc.  If I can keep DD up from 8-10 then I can get her to sleep a 6 to 7 hour stretch only semiwaking with gas (I just put her paci back in and rub her belly).

I apparently had my days and nights mixed up when I was an infant and my mom had to switch me around incrementally.  But if you can keep him up for 1.5 - 2 hours before bedtime and then start the process of making him sleepy I think you are better off than trying to keep him up for 5 hours b/c he will become overtired and then you might be SOL.
