How much freedom does LO have?

How much freedom does LO have around the house? Are there any areas where LO is not allowed? And how do you make sure they stay out of there?

I'm looking at gates - there are so many different ones and I'm feeling overwhelmed. Right now, I only have a very small area on the living room floor that is separated with one of those Super Yards (It's actually not closed but rather stretched out) and his bedroom. I have 4 levels in my home (including the basement) and 4 sets of stairs and I want to get this taken care of ASAP.

Re: How much freedom does LO have?

  • We live in an apartment and it's an open floorplan so I had no choice but to go ahead and baby-proof the entire place. DD's room is by far the safest because it's carpeted and it's all baby stuff in there anyways. Our bedroom is pretty safe minus our phone chargers, which she would probably do more damage to than the other way around.

We leave all the doors open, but she only ever goes more than one room away from me. The bathroom is obviosuly impossible to aby-proof because of the hard toilet and bathtub (which she looooves pulling up on), but she won't go in there unless I'm in there so it's no an issue (yet).

Under the computer I have the mattress from her PNP propped up to block all the wires. Under the fish tank I have  a giant piece of cardboard blocking those wires. She loves getting into our DVD/BluRay/video game collection, but there's not much I can do about that. I can't not have anything on the bottom 4 feet our my house, so I just keep an eye on her and give her the games we don't care about to nom on.

I'm not looking forward to figuring it all out again once we move.

  • I let E in the kitchen but only if I'm in there with her and not cooking.  If I'm not in the kitchen or if I'm cooking something then the baby gate goes up.  Once she's more steady pulling up and can understand "don't touch" better I'll be more comfortable with her in there.  Plus we didn't see the point in putting latches on all the cabinets just to take them down in a few months when we move. I have her PNP in front of the book case now so she can't get to it and her jumperoo is in front of the fire place.  I'm not sure what I'll do once she figures out to crawl under it.  To keep her out of the other rooms, I just shut the doors (we live in a 1 floor house).

  • Our place is so small it's almost impossible to expect him to stay out of any 1 area. We keep the bathroom door closed so he can't crawl in there, and I don't let him in the kitchen unless I'm in there with him, but we don't have a gate up, I just chase him. We also put cardboard behind all our open shelves to block the wires, and the exosaucer in front of the fireplace (although he's figured out how to push it over anyway). He basically has free reign. I let him get into whatever he wants unless it's dangerous obviously. I figure if something is off limits he'll want it even more, so why torture myself.

  • I stupidly took the baby gates down when Em was a few months old so Aiden could go where he pleased. Putting them back up now would be a nightmare. I'm just waiting to see how she does. The bathroom door stays closed but Aiden can open it to go potty. We have a door to the basement so I don't worry about that. Our steps to the upstairs our my only concern. Otherwise she has free reign of the downstairs living room, playroom, dining room and kitchen.
