TTC after 35

sex change meds covered but not IVF

So I went to  Quest Diagnostics to get blood drawn for my next appt and the nurse asks if I was trying to have a baby and I said yes. We start talking and she tells me that her friend's insurance doesnt cover anything for IVF but another person who has same insurance and works with her went for a sex change and their meds were covered...REALLY? I have nothing against people doing that but how is that fair? Crazy if you ask me.

ME:46 MH:44 DE IVF 2014
Met with RE 4/11. 2 IUI's BFN. DE best option. Switched clinics to do "shared" program. Had to retake all tests and a mamm that put me behind and then on a DE waiting list for 12 months. Picked a donor!! (10/13/13) Got matched. Estimated transfer in December. After 2.5 years of patiently waiting I will finally cycle....can hardly believe it. DE cycle got cancelled. One of her tests came back positive.  Waiting for another donor. Donor picked!! (1/18/14)

DE IVF #1 (4/26) BFN  DE FET #1 (6/4) BFP! Beta 1=339 Beta 2=852 Beta 3=9957 EDD 2/22/15!!

  • That is crazy.  Not that I want people choosing sex change to be denied meds, but again - it just seems so random what they will and won't cover.

  • My insurance is equal opportunity in denying people who would like to change sex as well as those of us that would like to have children. I also don't think they cover viagra. Jerks all around.

  • The first time that I was treated for endo, the insurance company told me that they would not cover the lupron because it was not an approved drug on their formulary.  They did have Viagra on the formulary.  I was in so much pain and so emotional that I actually asked one of the insurance people why they hated women.  They covered the lupron eventually but it was more work than it should have been.
