Cambridge Birth Center - experiences? XP w/ Natural Birth

DH and I attended an information night and tour at the Cambridge Birth Center last night.  It was so different than the hospital tour we had as part of our hypnobirthing class last week.  The birth center seemed like a place that I could really relax and get down to the business of birthing this kid with fear of having to fight off unwanted interventions.

As I consider switching my prenatal care over there, I was wondering, have any of you had experience with birth at the Cambridge Birth Center?

Re: Cambridge Birth Center - experiences? XP w/ Natural Birth

  • I have opted to birth at Mount Auburn with the midwives instead of a birth center because I really liked working with them for my initial inseminations and their practice intervention numbers, as well as the hospital's intervention numbers were very sensible. But it is a big practice and while that works for me I know some women aren't comfortable with that.

    MAMA Statistics 2010
    Births: 810 ::: Primary Cesarean Sections: 114 (14.07%)
    Attempted VBACs: 42 Successful: 35 (83%) ::: Episiotomy Rate: 1.85%
    Epidural Rate: 45.93% ::: Induction Rate: 15% ::: Augmentation Rate: 29%

    I can't put my finger on why I didn't really like the Cambridge Birthing Center but it just wasn't for me. I loved the birth center associated with Beverly Hospital but it doesn't make sense in terms of travel time.

    What hospital had you toured?

  • Thanks for responding. I've heard great things about Mount Auburn.  We live closer to Providence than Boston, so Beverly is really a bit too far for us for making the trip for all those appointments closer to delivery.

    Our hypnobirth class is up at Lowell General, so that's where the tour was last week.  And although delivering up there was never in the cards, it was interesting to see what a hospital birth environment looked like.

    The OB/midwife practice that I'm currently seeing delivers at Brigham and Newton-Wellesley. If I don't make the switch to Cambridge, I will most likely go with Newton-Wellesley.

    The things that I particularly liked about the CBC are that delivering in the birth tubs is possible (at NW you can labor in them, but have to get out to push), that there will not be any restrictions on food and drink intake (I'm hypoglycemic and it is important to me to be able to keep my sugars up without an IV), their doula program, and their low cesarean rate (4%).

  • If you are within a reasonable distance to the southcoast I'd also take a look at Tobey hospital, specifically CNM Louise Bastarache and her backup Dr. Tripp.  I've heard wonderful things about her practice (Wareham Nurse Midwives)

  • I've heard they have a really high transfer rate. If you search for them online you can see more experiences from people. There was a local bumpie who had an awful experience there. I hope you find what works best for you.
