Fort Benning Housing

We have projected orders for Benning and are currently at Fort Gordon, so we will be traveling across the state. I am looking for advice on housing. What neighborhoods are good, where NOT to live. We are not buying and are open to apartments although a house would be nice. We have 2 kids, 15 months and 3 weeks old. Anyone who has any info on the area, please share

There is new housing for E-6+ that is really nice. I have a good friend there and she loves it. They have a culdesac party every week end. There are a ton of kids out there.

We live on post and love it. It really depends on your rank to know what hosing area you'll live in. I'm not totally sure about off post housing, but if you do plan to try to live on post I would put your name on the waiting list. Good luck to you, so far we love it here!

If you're talking about living off post, definitely avoid south Columbus (Victory Drive, St. Mary's Road, Buena Vista Road areas). The south side of town happens to be the area closest to post, but it's definitely worth the drive to live elsewhere.

North Columbus (Bradley Park Drive, Veterans Parkway, Whitesville Road areas) is considered the nicest side of town, with lots of new shopping centers, restaurants, etc. Midtown (Macon Road, Reese Road, Manchester Expressway, Lakebottom) are older parts of town, but safe areas to look for a rental house.

You might also consider living in Phenix City, Alabama. Same distance to post, but rent and gas is considerably cheaper. There's a Super Walmart, and plenty of gas stations, grocery stores, and restaurants/fast food places (and it's just a 10-15 minute drive to everything else in Columbus).

My H is there right now for BOLC and he lives in Phenix City. He has a really nice apartment in a gated community, brand new build, for super cheap. His commute is about 15 minutes each way, so not to bad!

We lived in Columbus when first moving here in an apt. Columbus is nice but a tad bit more expensive. We ended up buying in Phenix City off Summerville Road and love it where we live, plus a good bit cheaper compared to Columbus. The catch is that the school district is not great - it's not terrible but not great. Base housing can be absolutely horrific or absolutely wonderful. Depends on the rank and what village you get placed in. =]

Rank wise anything under E-6 I would avoid living on post the houses are not that great. Officers get really nice big historical houses. Above E-6 McGraw and Patton are nice. FH and I are living in McGraw right now with my parents. (Dad is 1st Sgt, FH is E-4 reserves so no housing for him anyways). Northside of Columbus is nice and has good schools. Post schools are good too but you have to live on post. They just built a new apartment complex off Veteran's Prkway that's literally 5 minutes from an Elementary, Middle, and HS but that road is very busy in the mornings and at lunch time. Schomburgh (sp?) and Moon road have some nice subdivisions. Really I'd say online shop through some of the houses. I've lived in the Columbus/Ft. Benning area for 3 years and moved just about every 6 months. GL

We just left Benning after being there about a year. We lived in an apartment complex called Whisperwood in Columbus. The list for on post housing, especially with the Cav units coming down now too, is miles long. We loved it at Whisperwood. They have activities for the kids, a gym with classes, pools, tennis courts with lessons, etc. I know a lot of people found some great homes for rent in Phenix City as well but I preferred to live in Columbus. It seems that the further from post you get, the nicer the neighborhood.
