C-sections

Anyone else have extended epirual for pain management?

I'm just curious if any other ladies out there had an epidural for pain management after their c/s?  I told my OB prior to surgery that I was really sensitive to narcotics.  They cause bad nausea and vomiting for me so they went ahead and left an epidural catheter in until the 2nd morning - for about 36 hours after surgery.  I had Fentanyl (pain medication) going in at rate every hour and I could push a button if I needed extra.  After the first bag they took out the numbing medication so I was able to get up and walk about 12 hours after surgery. It was wonderful and I didn't need anything but a little Motrin while I had it.

  • yes, I had my c-section at 5pm they kept my spinal in through the night till mid morning the next day...a couple hours later it started to wear off and I could feel my legs again and just used regular pain meds to handle the pain.

  • OP--how did you handle pain management after it was out? I'm also HIGHLY sensitive to anything stronger than Motrin/Aleve and even when taken with anti-nausea I get very sick. I'm newly pregnant and already know that I'll have to have a C/S because of some previous issues. I'm concerned about how it's going to work to not take any pain meds.

I would opt for the epidural, I could be totally wrong but i think if it is scheduled they usually go for a spinal.  I ended up with the spinal which i loved, but it had morphine in it to last 24 hours.

I was able to handle taking 1 Vicodin 5/500 and Motrin.  They also suggested taking the Vicodin with a Zofran, but I was able to tolerate it as long as I had some food in my tummy.  I was worried about the duramorph (long lasting morphine in the spinal) because I've seen it cause nausea and vomiting for hours in some ladies.

  • I can't remember if I had a spinal or an epidural (scheduled CS so I now assume spinal?) but they left it in for over 24 hours, they finally removed it bc I couldn't stop vomiting. Ps - I delivered DS 1 at presby in dallas, this baby will be born in Austin.
