Another reason he'll be in a 5 point until he's in middle school....

I've posted on here several times about seeing my friend's then almost 5 yr old wiggle down in his seat belted high back booster until the lap belt was at his neck all while his mom was oblivious driving in the front seat.

Well... 2 Fridays ago we went with a friend of twins up hiking.  She offered to drive all of us in her van and offered to let Dylan borrow her older son's high back booster.

I put him in it, explained that he needed to leave the belt at his shoulder and under no circumstances was he to touch it.

He's a pretty good kid when it comes to minding - especially when I explain that it's a safety concern.

I looked back half way thru our trip - he's jacking with the belt and has it under his arm pit.

Warned him again and he was playing with it again on our way home.

I'm sure that it's the kind of thing where the novelty wears off and they stop playing with it but for now I'm happy leaving him in a 5 point.

He can do both latches on his 5 point just as quickly as he could with the lap belt and booster so it's not like moving him to a booster would make things any easier on me or him, KWIM?

Our IF journey: 1 m/c, 1 IVF with only 3 eggs retrieved yielding Dylan and a lost twin, 1 shocker unmedicated BFP resulting in Jace, 3 more unmedicated pregnancies ending in more losses.
Total score: 6 pregnancies, 5 losses, 2 amazing blessings that I'm thankful for every single day.

  • Nice to try something out and see how it goes sometimes.  That would make me so worried as well!  I love the 5 point harness!

  • My guys never slip down in my car and my DH has the Britax booster with the extra lap belt clip. That prevents the slip-down.  I think it is true that kids have to be able to sit in them correctly.

  • I've seen it mentioned several times on Parenting that some kids need booster "training" and practice.  Some people use boosters for short trips to get the kids used to them and harnesses for longer trips.  DS grew up a lot between 5 and 6 in this regard, as well.  We tried it a couple times at 5 and he was not ready.  He outgrew his harness seat at 5 3/4 and has done great in the booster since.  But, if you have a seat he will fit in for awhile, there's definitely no rush to switch.

  • I'm with ya!  I wish I could keep them in 5 points forever.  My oldest is of course curious why DH and I don't have carseats to keep us safe and when I've explained to him that they don't make them big enough for mom's and dad's he tells me " oh that's too bad mama". Smile
  • Me too.  DS is only 3 but I plan to keep him in his harnessed seat until he's too big for it and then in a belt positioning high back booster forever.  I have seen a few photos of kid's his age in belt positioning boosters online recently and it has taken all my will power not to reply with...warnings? links to recommendations?  i don't know what.  But man it's just so dangerous!

My willpower was reinforced when a the family of a friend of a friend was involved in a wreck.  Their 7 year old was not in a belt positioning booster of any sort and had wiggled it around so the belt was not positioned correctly and is now a quadraplegic. Her almost 2 year old sister was killed while riding in her forward facing convertible seat in the injury we've all seen and heard about through viral videos.
