Hi! I am new to this board, but wanted to see if anyone had a similar experience as mine. Yesterday I went for my second trimester ultrasound (I'm 19 weeks 3 days). Everything checked out fine until they were looking at the sacral area. The radiologist said she saw something she has never seen in 30 years. She described it as heart shaped, just over the sacral area. The spinal cord extended down as far as it should but for some reason the tissue or skin arreard to have a sort of "dimple" the shape of a heart. I was not too worried until she sat my husband and I down to discuss what to do next. Since she's never seen it before she couldn't tell what it is. She recommended an MRI, but wanted to know if we would terminate if something was wrong. I'm not interested in terminating but now I'm worried it could be something more serious (since she mentioned the possibility of terminating). It just seems strange she had never seen anything like that on an ultrasound in 30 years. All of my genetic blood work came back negative. Any words of advice or input?? Please!!...

And Coralee, his baby sister...On the way!
I agree that you need a second opinion.
My son has a sacral dimple (not sure if this is the same type of thing we are referring to). And it does not affect him one bit. I did not even realize it was there until a couple of months after his birth (all of a sudden I realized it was not normal to have 2 holes back there - rolling my eyes). Anyway - it could be a sign of Spina bifida.
With my son - you can see the floor and there is no hair or weakness of his lower limbs. So we were never referred to get an MRI. I hope this helps... good luck and please update us. (Below is a link and picture I found -- not my son's picture

it's so strange that you posted this- becuase when i read this post i thought "i wonder if sacral dimples can be seen on u/s's." i googled, and came up with no info on that- but that's what i thought when i read the post. my daughter has one too. they are actually fairly common, and are just that... a dimple.
I never thought about them showing up on u/s's before either. I hope that's just what this is... a sacral dimple.
OP: I really hope we were able to help out a little.
WHY IN THE WORLD WOULD SHE ASK YOU ABOUT TERMINATING AT THIS POINT?????
That's insane... she doesn't even have a clue about what's wrong... definitely a second opinion... find a maternal fetal specialist in your area. I'm a NP, and most docs that I know WILL NOT start discussing extreme measures w/ patients (like terminating your pregnancy) until they know with absolute certainty what the problem is. I'm not an OB, but it seems like they'd do a higher level u/s before a MRI...
Anyway best wishes to you
Thank you for all of your replies!! Makes me feel a little better about the situation. I have a follow up ultrasound in three weeks but will see my OB next week. Hopefully she will be able to give me some insight after reading the radiologists report. BTW the radiologist has 30 years of experience, pioneered 3D/4D ultrasounds and has written a book about fetal anomalies. She seems to know her stuff but still I question what she was looking at. I work in health care so I am very familiar with doctors and the way they operate.
My brother who is also a radiologist said that you can't see sacral dimples on an ultrasound. I wish I had paid better attention to what she was looking at but I was kind of in shock at the time. She kept mentioning something about the underlying/surrounding tissue that seemed to form a heart shape around the sacral area (possibly a dimple??) and she had NEVER seen this before in 30 years...who knows what that means. I wasn't too worried at first since I used to work in the NICU, but when she mentioned the possibility of terminating if it is a problem I was even more in shock. I agree, why give the option of terminating until you know if it really is something bad. I guess her reason for asking if terminating would ever be an option is that if I would terminate then she would recommend an MRI sooner, if not then we can wait until the baby is bigger to get a better view. Needless to say it was a little traumatic. This is my second pregnancy, I miscarried at 10 weeks with my first one...
Thanks for your support!!! I really appreciate it!!
Please be sure to update us when you talk to your OB/ find out more info. Good luck!
