not interested in debating this topic. but I am interested to learn how many moms are thinking of using or have already started off on a delayed schedule, specifically Dr. Sears' suggestion.
my gut keeps telling me to consider a delayed schedule, so if you are going that route I'd love to know what led you to that decision. Also, are your doctors cooperating with you? Ours is almost 70 so I have a feeling we'll be in for an ear full if we do decide to delay.
thank you! sorry if this has been asked before (which i'm sure it has). if i had a baby who slept I might be able to know what's going on more than three posts down the page
Re: anyone using the delayed shot schedule?
I was all about and then at the advice of me pedi decided against it. I had a set of vax that didn't take and work in a school where the population falsifies vax records so I didn't want to potentially give LO something.
Also with it being so close to winter my dr. and I felt that vax for pneumonia, rotovirus and whooping cough were important.
My pedi is usually all about alternative schedules as he's a bit green peace, but in this case it just wasn't best for us.
We're doing the delayed shot schedule. I really just wanted to limit all of the things that were put in her system at once. DH and I both agreed on that and just personally didn't feel comfortable with all the shots at once. At 2 months, we did the DTaP and rotavirus (per Dr. Sears schedule) and will go back at 3 months to get the Hib and Prevnar (I think that's what it's called). I read the Dr. Sears vaccine book.
My nephew had a bad reaction to his shots and they had trouble isolating which one. My sister is very selective about vaccinations now because of it. We still wanted to fully vaccinate, but wanted to know if she had a reaction and not have so much go into her at once (especially the aluminum).
I'll feel more relaxed once she's had the 3 month shots, but I do feel like we made the right decision for us. Oh and I didn't even talk to my pedi about it ahead of time...just brought it up at at the 2 month visit. He said he was fine with it. You could tell it's not his a suggestion he was going to make on his own, but he was okay with it and thought it was a fine decision for us. He just said to make sure that we keep up with her schedule on our own (which of course we will). He even suggested not getting the rota since we won't have her in daycare, but DH really wanted to follow Dr. Sears specifically for now, so we got it.
I know delayed vaccinations are very unpopular with some people, but after researching, I just didn't feel fully comfortable with all of them at once. I was a wreck right around her 2 month appointment, wondering if we were doing the right thing, but I feel better about it now.
cool, thanks for the info. hadn't really realized we are going to be coming up on cold and flu season. great point. its interesting to hear a rather "green peace" doc suggested you not delay. gives me more to think about! thanks!
Yeah it was really interesting. He was honest and gave me lots of facts. I'd have been all over it but he made lots of valid points I couldn't argue with.
Perhaps you should find a pedi more in line with your thinking. The office where my LO goes does a delayed schedule for parents that request it but they strongly discourage it. There are additional fees that go along with it and my understanding is that most insurance companies will not pay for multiple "well" visits. If I were interested in delaying his vaccinations, I'd probably find a pediatrician that was more receptive to the idea.
We are delaying all shots until DD is 6 months. Our pedi is very cooperative though he does advocate getting all vax. The pedi office actually has walk in vax hours where you can just show up, request your shot and be on your way. You don't even have to pay for an office visit.
I'm home w/ DD until January so her exposure to different people is minimal. Plus, when I do go back to work, we have a nanny coming to our house rather than daycare. DH doesn't work on Fridays, so he will be taking DD to the pedi every couple of weeks for her shots. She will get all the shots, just not when she's so little. We plan to have her on track by the time she goes to school.
I know it's not popular, so we don't advertise our plans to our friends. DH & I agreed to this plan after reading Dr. Sears and talking with other parents we trust.
We are. I spent months reading books, articles, etc and decided I was not entirely comfortable with LO getting all the shots at once. I talked with our pediatrician and we agreed on a schedule.
LO got DTaP at his two-month appointment. He will get Prevnar and HIB at three-months, then DTaP again at four months, etc. All other shots we will hold off on until he is two years old.
I like this schedule, because if he does happen to have an adverse reaction to one of the shots, it will be easier to figure out which shot it was so we can avoid it in the future.
In the end I made the decision about which shots to get based on the area we live in (whooping cough has been a problem for our area), the likelihood of LO one contracting the disease/illness and the severity of the diseases/illnesses.
The fact that I am a SAHM definitely played a role in my decision. DH and I are also fully vaccinated to help protect LO.
