TTC after 35

Forbidden foods?

Are you avoiding certain foods while TTC?  At first, I was all gung ho and cut everything out.  Now after a year and a half, I've slacked and started eating wonderful poached runny eggs, sushi, and proscuitto again.  I asked my RE and she told me just to avoid in 2ww.  What is everyone else doing?

  • I am doing the fertility diet but I am not keeping to it too much.  They told me to keep away from white foods like bleached flour and sugar.  So I try to eat whole wheat pasta and raw sugar.  The RE also told me to only have one to two alcoholic beverages a week.  I am not a big alcoholic or anything but I do enjoy a few beers when we are out and during football games.  Luckily no one noticed that I was not drinking on Sunday.  I don't eat sushi during the 2ww but other than that, I will keep eating it.  Fish is good for fertility.

  • I practice both eat and drink till its pink. So, I haven't limited myself at all in the food arena. Since it has been well over a year since I began TTC, I am glad, because I would have missed out on eating a lot of yummy things!

    FET #2 1 d6 embryo didn't survive thaw, transferred last d6. CP :(

  • I cut out soy completely for this last cycle (easier said than done when you don't eat meat).  I also started eating an egg just about every day b/c the RE felt that at least some non-dairy animal protein was important.    I have also been avoiding alcohol and caffeine during the 2ww.

    Do you feel that you get enough proten with the egg?  I don't eat red meat or pork but I do eat poultry and fish sometimes.  DH really wants me to start eating red meat because he thinks that it would be healthier.  I completely disagree.  Unless he can produce a medial degree, I am winning this one.

  • I cut out coffee.  At first I just did it for the tww, but then I found I didn't miss it.  I will still have a cup of coffee once in awhile - but I no longer "need" 3-4 cups a day.  Now as far as wine goes - I am a firm believer in drink till it's pink.

     I don't eat red meat or pork, either (haven't in well over 20 years).  I think DH is hoping I will start craving them when we get PG, but I get sick if I eat them now.  I have been making a point of some protein every day.  I have never had an iron defficiency issue in the past - I hope that continues!

  • I have tried to alter things a little...including severely limiting coffee and alcohol, which I NEVER thought I'd do.  It seems like the more I read especially about alcohol on hormone levels, etc, the more I might as well just do away with it...and then make up for it once DH or DS is a reality!!  I miss my nightly glass of wine so much.

    This is me exactly.  I really don't understand how they thing that we will be able to eat something that has previously made us sick when we are dealing with morning sickness.  However, the book the fertility diet does say that red meat helps.  I wanted to try it but I just could not do it.

    I also eat dairy, beans (other than soy), and I make sure to eat a big handful of almonds every day.  I think a combination of animal, beans, and nuts is the most well-rounded way to go about it.  I don't think there's any reason to add red meat.  The RE was fine with me just having eggs and dairy as my only animal-sources.  And I managed to get KU this cycle, so I don't think my body is missing meat.

  • I am 3 years into IF and don't really care to restrict myself anymore  (poor attitude I know) however in a book that I was reading way back then it said that you should not eat peas!!!! I still don't eat them....easy cause I don't really llike them!!

    surgery suggested to move ovary to an better placement but....we moved two time zones away and are financially and emotionally empty

  • I cut out caffeine all together.. I still drink Caff Free Diet Soda though and I know it is SO bad for me but I don't drink alcohol at all so it is my version of rebellion.  :)  I also am mindful of things like raw egg (Why does licking the spoon after mixing a cake always seem so inviting?) during the 2ww.  Other than that I am just trying to eat "better'.  But if there was a food to eat or avoid in order to get pg I would be doing it!  Just tell me what it is.  :)

    I'm of the drink (very moderately) 'til it's pink philosophy but I have been wondering lately how much it affects hormones and conception and if I ought to stop it . . . or mostly stop it.  Anyone know of any good articles on the subject?  (I don't mean articles on fetal alcohol syndrome, etc. -- articles on effects of alcohol on ability to conceive.)  Maybe I just need a good motivating read to knock it off.  Though like ReeceFamily I love an end-of-day glass of wine -- and I don't want to underestimate the relaxing effect of that on conception either!

    Peas are banned from my house.  I read the book and it gave me another reason to hate those gross squishy things.  Now when DH wants them, I don't have to compromise.

    I've cut all caffeine, processed foods, and all white  carbs/sugars.  My nutritionist also suggested cutting out all cow's dairy, and I'm following this about 90%.  It's just too hard for me to not eat cheese and I use yogurt for smothies, but I sub almond milk for regular.  I've also ready to stay away from soy products, which isn't really an issue for me.

    Shusi itself isactually  fine, so long as you don't eat the kind made with raw fishes.  Again, not an issue for me. I also don't eat any of the bad fishes they say to stay away from so that one's easy too.

    I just mostly miss dairy.  I just want to get KTFU so I can go back to milk again.

    Did she tell you why she wanted you to cut out all dairy?  Some studies have indicated that one serving of full fat dairy actually increases fertility.  I am not being snarky, I was just wondering what the rational was behind it.

    I am not 3 yrs in but I have a poor atttitude now as well and am not restricting either. I didn't drink during IVF and limited caffeine but other than when I am cycling, I am not bothering at this point.

  • Im 2ww and I just craved Slim Jims (so weird)... now that has to be the worst thing ever to eat... and I stopped and got them... Im just not drinking the next 2 weeks and restricting coffee to a cup. If I found out I was pregnant I would be so good and def. not eat Slim Jims...
  • This may sound bad but I am also of the feeling drink until it's pink. I am writing this as I drink my glass of wine 3 DPO. I have been at this for a year and half and in the beginning I totally gave up my wine in the 2ww and then realized very quickly that I was missing out. I do only have one glass maybe 4-5 times a week and I am not much for caffeine but just my one cup of coffee in the morning. I will probably give up my wine if we decide to move onto IVF since we'll pay a large portion out of pocket and I want do everything I can to make it happen. I do normally eat right already so I don't feel that bad w/ the wine. We must live and enjoy (w/i reason) ourselves during this process or we'll go stark raving mad!

  • The woman that does my fertility massages told me that DH should not be eating lemmons because it affects the morphology.  I have not found anything to back it up but he can certainly go without citrus so he gets that on a limited basis.
