Toddlers: 24 Months+

Not interested in the potty

My DS is 2.5 years old and he knows when he pees and poops in his diaper, he asks for diaper changes, he has potty books, and a potty seat, but he never wants to take of his diaper off and try sitting on the potty. Not his little potty, not our toilet, nothing. He's completely uninterested in trying. I really think he is ready to potty train except for this one hurdle. Any suggestions?

Re: Not interested in the potty

  • I'll be checking back for responses...this is my 2 dd's exactly...

I am guessing we will just wait until they do get interested in trying...they will sit on their little potty seat fully clothed only while I pee on our big potty...so I am just praising them for that now hoping it will get them interested...

  • We've got the same thing going on here.  And if we ask her if she wants to sit on the potty she says NO.  I'm just going to wait it out.

  • My DS just turned 3 this weekend. No interest whatsoever. Won't sit, doesnt care about character underpants, stickers, stamps, special presents, or other pt'd kids . We have books, dvd's, songs, different potties, you name it.  He refuses to try, even to the point of tears if you merely mention it. He always tells me that he'll " try a different day"

We've tried the 3Day about 4 times now, starting at 19/20 months.  All it's done is tied us to the house for 5-6 days each time. Last round, he held his bm to the point of constipation. Its not so important to me if it makes him miserable. It'll happen. Im not thrilled, but what can you do? I will not make him cry over the potty.

  • I've actually got the opposite problem with DS2.  He is interested and wants to sit on the potty but has no idea how to make himself go.

Just relax...your DS is young.  And even being able to go on the potty doesn't mean he is ready to be potty trained.  DS1 knew how to pee on the potty at 18 months.  He had no desire to do it consistently though, until he was finally pt'd at 3 1/2.  That's 2 years!  I'm glad I let him do it on his own terms though, because it made it less stressful for both of us.  I fully plan on being just as patient with DS2.

  • We are having the same issue and I'm hoping she's going to get it to click.

She has a potty and will go on it some times, but doesn't get it.   I keep trying and I know daycare is trying as well.

  • DS goes all day at DC and has been coming home in the same diaper he went in(which is kinda gross but that's another story).  At home he has no interest and screams if I try to put him on the toliet.  DC provider told me yesterday that he is ready for pullups which i haven't even thought about buying b/c he doesn't do that at home.  Not sure what to do.  Turned 2 the end of June so I'm not pushing it.  i feel lazy but i ask and he screams so should i push or not?!?!??!?!

  • DD is the same way - for now, we continue to offer her the potty chair and hope things change soon!
