Prevacid Users

How do you give Prevacid? DD was just switched from Zantac to Prevacid a few days ago. She took Zantac in a bottle nipple and would just suck it right down not mixed with anything. We've tried grinding the tablet up in water and giving it in a nipple and a syringe. We've also tried putting the powder in her mouth and then giving her a little water to wash it down. No matter what we try, she only gets part of it.

Re: Prevacid Users

  • I add it to the bottle and let the tablet dissolve.DD always drinks the entire bottle so it's never been a problem for her to receive the entire dose.

  • I never found a way to get all of the Prevacid to dissole for my LO to get it all and never found a good way to give it. My doctor put him on Nexium a powder packet that you add to the bottle that dissolves almost instantly it is so easy to give. But I tried crushing, mixing first, everything with the Prevacid and never found a good way. Sorry

  • DD is on about a 1/2 a pill, so I dissolve in a very small amount of water right in the syringe (put the pill into the syringe, replace the plunger and suck up a small amount of water into it) and give it it in small amounts while she sucks on her paci. She doesn't always get it all, but that is the best we have been able to do. It is too big to fit through a regular bottle nipple.

As PP said, we try to give it 30 minutes before meals on an empty tummy.

  • Thanks ladies. I'm going to find out about compounding it into a liquid. That would be perfect!

This! We finally switched to this after using the solutabs for 3 months, a world of difference when LO started to actually get the entire amount she was prescribed. I mix it with her vitamins which a a fruit flavor and she takes it no problems. Good luck!

ps, we had to use Target pharmacy as our Walmart didn't offer compounding.

  • In a syringe with a little water. It doesn't dissolve great no matter how long it sits but if you just turn the syringe as you push it into her mouth I can usually get it all out. She loves the stuff though and sucks it down like it's candy so that may help.

  • We compound also. They mix it with Sodium Bicarb which has a bitter taste so I have them flavor with grape. Not a lot of places compound and it is pretty expensive to do. Luckily our insurance pays for all but $25, otherwise from our Walgreens it would be over $200 every 2-3 weeks.

When you do this, have them mix a flavor into it (like grape) or else it tastes nasty and LO will spit it out everywhere. We learned that the hard way. He maybe took like 10% of it until he realized how gross it was. When we got it refiled, we had grape flavor added and now, believe it or not, he loves it!
