I've heard it's ok if it doesn't touch the scalp, but it depends on how cautious you and your doctor are. I asked my doctor and she said no touchups or highlights in the first tri for me...

My obgyn said highlights yes, all around color no. Because the highlights are suppose to be away from the scalp, and the chemical smell is not as bad. She still said no for doing it myself though, since salons have proper ventilation. I will prolly wait a few more weeks to be on the safe side.
I went the cheap route and bought box dye and did it at home maybe a week before I found out I was pregnant. The color did NOT turn out and was way red when it was supposed to be a pretty auburn. My Dr said wait until 2T. So I'm stuck with it. It's fading but I hate it!!
I can't wait until 2T to get some highlights to hide this.

My stylist suggested highlights because they don't touch the scalp. She also sat mr up front by the door while I processed so I got plenty of fresh air.
I just got highlights last week (the day before I got a BFP)... I wasn't even thinking I was pregnant when i made the appt and about half way through her foiling my hair I thought "dang it, I forgot to POAS before this!!!"... turns out I got my BFP the next morning so hopefully everything is ok.... but when I was pregnant the first time they said highlights were ok because they aren't actually putting in all over your scalp, just on your hair then they cover it with foil.

Re: hair highlights
Highlights are better than all-over color because it doesn't touch your scalp, but if the salon is poorly ventalated, it's a no-go.
My doc said after the first tri, I can do pretty much whatever I want with my hair color, again, pending proper ventalation.
Then came a miscarriage March '11
Then came a baby in the baby carriage May 16, 12
Waiting on our second little peanut!
