How to get DS' constipation caused by starting school under control?

DS is in his 5th week of school right now.  Right after he started school, he started having trouble with really hard stools in very small amounts but very frequently, and I assumed it was because he wasn't drinking as much water as he usually does during the afternoons when he is at school.

I started sending a water bottle (ok'ed by his teacher) everyday to help, but we're still having issues.  I've also bumped up the fruits, veggies and other fiber in his diet as much as I can.  It's still just such an issue, and he's having very small movements multiple times per day.

I don't want to go back to Miralax, which we've done in the past, especially since I don't want him to have an urgent situation at school and it makes him a little unpredictable, but it isn't getting back to normal yet.

If your DC had to adjust to going to school in this regard, how long did it take?  Ideas?

  • I give my kids Pedialax fiber gummies and they work great.  I do try to give any fiber products with juice or water.  I don't think the fiber gummies cause any urgency, you could do just 1 a day or up to 3x a day.  They don't send my DD running to the bathroom although she sort of tends to go after lunch anyway.  I do think kids like to go at home (versus other places - stores etc), so if you do more fiber maybe do it at home (like after dinner or something)?

I also like double fiber bread, since bread can be constipating anyway.

  • Have you tried dried apricots?

My kids will eat them like candy.

You could do some at breakfast and some as an after school or after dinner snack.

Do you do something like oatmeal for every breakfast?  Mine eat oatmeal with fresh fruit and yogurt in it like it's going out of style.

A bottle of water at pick up that he drinks on the way home?

    Sorry... that's all I've got.

Our IF journey: 1 m/c, 1 IVF with only 3 eggs retrieved yielding Dylan and a lost twin, 1 shocker unmedicated BFP resulting in Jace, 3 more unmedicated pregnancies ending in more losses.
Total score: 6 pregnancies, 5 losses, 2 amazing blessings that I'm thankful for every single day.
  • He has a yogurt and either dry cheerios or Cracklin' Oatbran for breakfast everyday.  If he doesn't have it then, he usually chooses that combo for a snack later in the day.  We do baby carrots, dried apricots, prunes and dried mango for snacks on the go and sometimes at home, and otherwise, I incorporate fruits and fibery snacks like popcorn into the routine.  I almost exclusively use whole grains (rice, pasta and breads).

I just don't know what to do for the poor kid. <<sigh>> Maybe it's time to do some Miralax again.  I suppose I could do it Thurs night, and then it would have all weekend to work through him (doesn't have school on Fridays).  I was just kind of hoping that we could solve the problem without it, especially since he isn't straining too much more than normal.
