Speech Early intervention

Alice qualified for speech services through ABC pediatric Therapy in western hills.  I called insurance company and she is only alloted 20 sessions per year.  I was wondering if anyone had experience with help me grow?  Alice qualified because she is only speaking 2-3 words at 20 months.

Re: Speech Early intervention

  • I am a speech therapist.  I would definitely contact Help Me Grow.  They come to your home and is funded through the state.  You can receive sercives through Help Me Grow and ABC pedi therapy too if you want.  Also, triple check with your insurance that they cover just a delay b/c many times it is only if they were born with a disorder or have a stroke or major injury causing the lack of speech.  Let me know if you have other questions. I work for First Steps Early Intervention in KY :)

Our kids are 19mths apart and we LOVE it!!

Married to my BFF on 8.13.05 (after dating 5 years)!

  • My 2 yr old is involved with Help Me Grow and they have been absolutely amazing. They come to us, and work with us on anything we need. I cannot sing their praises enough!
  • DS also received speech services through HMG.  Definitely contact them- you can put a referral in through their website or contact them.  I was VERY happy with the support they gave us, and wish I would have contacted them sooner.  They will do a complete evaluation at first to make sure she qualifies, and the eval is in  your home.  By complete, I mean they'll do an evaluation for physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy.  Some of their methods include playing games with your LO and some of it is a parent interview.

The reason they do this in your home is because it is where your child is going to be the most comfortable.  So the eval is in your home, and then you'll be paired with the right specialist (or specialists if there are other issues) who will come to your home every 1-3 weeks, depending on your need.  Our HMG speech therapist was wonderful and gave us lots of strategies to help DS talk more.

As he approached his 3rd birthday, they set us up with our local school district to continue services.  He was evaluated by them earlier this year.  Because he is so far behind in speech, an IEP (Individual Education Plan)  has been written for his speech delay and he will go to preschool at our local elementary school.  In addition, because of the IEP, there is no cost for this beyond our normal school fee ($50), and you don't have to have insurance to get it or be low income.  Early intervention is sooo important, and I cannot sing their praises enough.

All of these programs are covered by the Ohio Department of Health, Americans with Disabitilies Act, and IDEA (Individuals with Disabilties Education Act).

In addition to the free services, we were referred for an eval at Children's by our pedi, and will have used all 20 of our visits there this year.  To help us spread out our 20 visits, we go every other week, and a few of those visits we've skipped so we can still have a visit in November and/or December.  I also love the therapist at Children's that we've used!

  • Yep, call Help Me Grow.  I am a Developmental Specialist for Help Me Grow.  I just started that position in July, but was a Service Coordinator for HMG for the 3 years before that.  281-GROW is the number.  Let me know if you have other questions!
