Oh, and this was an interesting article. They said not to add compost to your soil where you plan to grow carrots or root veggies because you'll get good leaf growth with poor root growth. Who knew?
We just planted garlic but that will come up next year. We were looking to plant spinach but all they garden center had was seeds and I didn't think that made sense here.

I'm so jealous of gardeners. Our soil is basically just sand and growing anything beyond lettuce takes a lot of soil love (which my brown thumb doesn't care to bother with)!
I've never planted a fall garden before but my summer one did so poorly (lack of warmth and sun this year) and I'd love to have more produce!
Thinking of doing spinach, kale, beets, carrots, broccoli and cauliflower...maybe I'm almost afraid to try and plant anything though..I'm tired of my gardens not growing or having long enough to grow.
Should I plant from seed or buy seedlings?

Perhaps try growing only REALLY sturdy stuff. This doc is from way up north, but it will give a good idea of stuff that will grow when it gets really cold.
I don't have a lot of experience gardening and hap-hazardly/coincidentally planted our butternut squash in late July. The problem is that its in our container garden on our balcony. The leaves are monstrous. I'm glad you brought this up, though. Maybe I'll try to go this weekend and find some seeds. (We've historically had a hard time finding organic seeds around here. Beginning to wonder how important it is for the seeds to be organic).

Have you considered doing raised beds? We did a few the first couple years when we bought our house and were unsure what the previous home owner put in the soil. I would think it would work well for poor soil quality as well. Instructions here.
I'm actually in western WA so that link works just fine.
I'm wondering if I'm too late to plant. It's already sept. and for my area most say to plant but Aug. ...but our summer has been so weird this year. Very late. Maybe I'll get lucky.

That is good to know. I didn't add compost and was worried it would be bad for what I planted.
I did carrots, parsnips, cabbage, collard greens, and spinach this year. It's the first time I've done a fall garden, so we'll see how it goes!
