Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Carseat and head position

When I took my daughter out of her carseat today her head was slouched all the way forward and kind of sideways...it looked awfully uncomfortable and it makes me nervous to drive around and not be able to see her.  She's 2 months old but doesn't have very good head control yet.

What do you do to make sure your baby's head stays in place in the carseat? She has the Graco B is for Bear carseat and I have the headrest thing in there but it doesn't really seem to help.

Re: Carseat and head position

  • Jynx23, my daughter does the same thing. She's 3 months, and has great head control. I took out the head rest, and it actually helped - her head now rests more comfortably snuggled into the side of the car seat instead of awkwardly turned and bent forward. It isn't going to harm your baby, they're so pliable right now. It's more uncomfortable for you than her, she was probably contorted in a similar position in your uterus. I know it looks uncomfortable and people probably comment on how awkward she looks, but it's really not a big deal - I talked to alot of people about it. I suggest removing the head rest and seeing how she reacts - hopefully that helps!

  • Be sure the carseat is at the correct incline as well. My carseat has a different level of incline for newborns and older infants, and the newborn position leaves the seat pretty low back so that her head doesn't lean forward.

  • agreed. adjust the shoulder straps andmake sure it is snug enough. I know they are uncomfortable when you tighten the straps but if they are too loose, LO will slump over.

  • We have the same carseat and had the same problem until we moved the shoulder straps up.  Since we have moved them, DD head has stayed upright.  Oh, and we still have the headrest thing still in there.
  • Thanks for the ideas.  I think I may have had the straps too loose so I'll try tightening them and and moving it up to see if that helps.

Is the carseat resting in the base? I know that the base will sometimes tilt the carseat backwards a little more so she won't be so slouched?

  • Both of my kiddos like to slouch down like that.  In fact, DD even did it laying flat in her bed when sleeping.

As far as adjusting the straps, make sure that they are at or just below LOs shoulders or they are too high.  You should also only be able to get one finger in between baby and the straps or they are too loose.
