Babies on the Brain

What was I thinking?

I just signed up for the Rugged Maniac 5K.

I'm 50% excited and 50% shiitting my pants.

Anyone done this? Pointers?

  • Just be careful.  At the one here 1 guy is now paralyzed because he dove head first into the mud pit.

And another died from complications due to heat exhaustion the next day.

  • Oh my GOD that looks fun!

    I love mud runs/obstacle courses.

  • OMG that looks so fun!

I've never run one before, but I'd probably run a few days a week with one of those runs kind of like a circuit thing.  Run a quarter mile, stop and do pushups, run a quarter mile, stop and do lunges, so on so on...  You'll need to be able to function through the obstacles and then pick your pace back up and that may be a way to do so.

  • The one I did in August had one serious injury - a woman broke her knee when she jumped into the mud pit and hit a rock.  That was one out of thousands of participants.  I didn't jump into the mud pits - I entered cautiously.

I had an absolute blast.  I already run so I didn't do anything in particular to train for it.  It was the most fun I had in a long time.  Definitely enjoy it!

Are you talking about the one from this summer? That one was warrior dash, this one looks different.

OP, as long as you're hydrating yourself with something other than just alcohol, you should be good. This one looks like fun though. You should google the warrior dash, it looks hard core, and just stupid, especially when done when we were having some of the hottest temps in a while.

I was.  It looks kind of similar though.

  • My DH did the 'warrior dash' back in the summer and had a blast.  However there were a lot of people who had no business being in any kind of run doing it.  I think the accidents and such could maybe have been prevented if people had done some 'training' for it.  My DH runs and or bikes every day and is in great shape.  He said he was surprised at how easy it was and wants to do it again next year.  I think it looks like fun, but as I said please don't expect it to be easy with no preparation.

I would just like to add, that while that injury was tragic, he dove head first AFTER signing a waiver that had in no less than 3 places, rules and warnings about diving. There was also a DJ in the location reminding runners not to dive. He was in that pit 12 minutes before I ran through it.

That race had over 20k runners cross the finish line, and less than 30 cases of injury. Those a pretty good odds.

Be safe, use your head, and have a blast. They are SO MUCH FUN! We will be doing it again next year.
