Maternity coat/jacket

My DS was born in August so this wasn't an issue with him.  If you had a spring or winter baby, what did you do?  Where did you find one?  I don't want to spend a ton on something I won't wear that much.

Re: Maternity coat/jacket

  • I got a maternity coat at Gap and it worked great.  It wasn't super expensive, but since DS was due in late March, I knew I'd have to go all winter.  A friend of mine had her DD in early January and just wore a winter coat she already had that was just really big on her to begin with.

  • I'm in exactly the same boat, so am glad you posted! DD was a September baby (today is her birthday!), and baby #2 is due in late March, so I'll be faced with the same dilemma. I'll be watching this thread closely...

  • DD was born 3/22 so I needed a coat for the whole winter. I bought a nice lined wool one at Pea in the Pod. It was pricey but I needed something warm because I walked to and from the Metro every day for work. I tried a few of the cheaper ones at Old Navy and the other maternity stores and I thought they were a bit flimsy. But if you can bulk up with sweaters and such underneath, they might work. I wore it from November through until I had DD, so I figure it was almost worth the money. I'll hold on to it in case our next one is a spring baby too.

ETA: Maternity consignment stores might have some. I know they go fast , but if you start looking now, you might be lucky. Last year I saw a couple at Bellies and Babies in Alexandria (Del Ray) but they were too small.

  • Just went online to find the coat I bought and it's on sale. I think it's a great deal! Great quality for the price.

  • I bought one from Old Navy. It was about $40 and worked fine for me. It was a little thin, but I wore layers underneath it and made it through until January, including a few December days in Minnesota during the blizzard that collapsed the metrodome.

It was actually pretty cute and I'm a little sad that it's tent-like now as it's a nice gray plaid and my other winter coats are all solids.

  • H was born in December so I only had a few months of cold to endure, so I didn't want to spend a lot. I got a coat from Old Navy for under $40 - it was some of that "frost free" outer material they use and had fleece lining. It certainly wasn't dressy at all, but it did the trick.

  • I'll probably borrow one of DH's coats (he seriously has a closet full) if I can find one that will fit ok.  I'd rather not spend much money on something I'll only wear for a month or two.

  • I just used a coat I already had and at the very end of my pregnancies I just left it unzipped.  I wore a big scarf that I looped around my neck and down the front of me so I didn't freeze.  Two of my kids were Feb. babies.

  • I also bought a jacket at Old Navy. It wasn't the warmest thing ever, but it did the trick. I had a May baby, so I was able to wear one of my non-maternity coats well into the winter, which I think helped make the Old Navy coat more useful.

  • I bought a coat at Old Navy as well.  $32 - on sale, it was a wool blend with a magenta lining.  It worked just fine, but I don't take public transit.

  • And as far as temperature goes - remember that you'll probably be running a bit warmer as we get into winter.

  • I also bought a coat from Old Navy - it was the puffy kind and I actually stayed much warmer than I thought (I'm normally freezing).  i think like pp mentioned, you run warmer anyway so it was the perfect weight all winter long.

  • I just used the coat I had and kept it unzipped.  I was so hot all of the time anyway that I was just fine without zipping it.  DS was a late April baby.

  • I think I probably had the same one that AK1234 had.  I still have it around and would be happy to sell it if you would like it.
