I did when my DD was still swaddled. At the time she couldn't really move so I figured it was ok. She would just lay there and look at it. I don't know if I would do it now that she is rolling all around her crib.

Yes.. from the time they came home from the NICU. While they were swaddled I wasn't worried at all and by the time they weren't swaddled they had good enough neck control I wasn't worried. I have one DD that shoves her face into its belly and tries to lick it all night. It's solid enough and not "pilllow" like that I wasn't worried.
At daycare, the put them in with the girls to help them fall asleep and once they are asleep they remove it from the crib. I see this as a good compromise.
