F/U behind in pre-k

I think each state has different focus as well as different schools have different focus.

I'm surprised at this school in SC.  It is larger and they only had two spots available which were the ages for Ridge and Colton so it was perfect and meant to be.

The creativity Ridge's teacher use here is amazing.  I believe Ridge's teacher has her masters in early education and I'm so impressed with the projects and work he takes home.  She is very caring and nurturing but also is big on teaching responsibility for ones self, respecting others and authority.  I can't tell you how impressed I am.

Ridge has known his alphabet, colors and shapes since before he was 2.  He also loves puzzles and mazes. He's also always been way ahead on language. Now these things are still on the agenda that they are learning and he is probably ahead here.  Where he is behind is in writing.  He loves to write on our iPad but doesn't really like to sit down and write with pencil and paper and I don't force the issue too much.  But all the other children in his class have amazing handwriting.  I was shocked at how well they write. The teacher makes them sign in each day so I can see it in black and white.  This was def a focus for them last year where it wasn't in Ridge's school.

I really don't want to get in some educational debate or opinionated post.  But I do want to say how impressed at what I see here at this private 2-k school and I'm really happy we found it.  And it is almost 50% less than what we paid in Atlanta plus we don't have to do all the fundraising things.

  • That school sounds awesome!  My main concern is that I want that balance that you just described.  I want them to enjoy school in these early years but I also want them to learn life skills that will get them through the later school years when learning isn't so much "fun" anymore, you know?  I think a lot of my thoughts on this subject is also coming from our own internal debate on public vs. private schools.  I know there is no "right" answer but its just a lot to think about.

  • I don't think it is possible to be behind in pre-k for a child like yours.  I am not a fan of focusing on that stuff at such a young age.  If a child is interested, great, nurture that, but at 4, I see no reason for concern.  There are lots of very good reasons why many early education schools do not focus on things like handwriting.  I also don't believe that your child is somehow in a school where every child has good handwriting.  My DH has illegible handwriting and he is 45.  I can't even read notes he writes to me.  My DD goes to OT for "handwriting", but not so she can write per se, but so she can improve her upper body, hand strength, and fine motor.   I would not worry about this for a minute.
