If you cannot use the quilt or the bumper for safety reason what is the point of the crib set? Doesn?t it make more since to just buy fitted sheets? I feel like I am missing something. Is there something else that they come with that I have no clue about?
I know it may be a dumb question but?..

You are right, I think it's just for some people (like myself) that we like a certain theme and just go with it. But it is certainly not necessary to have one, especially since they can be very expensive.
And to me, I"m still not sold on the not using the bumper. (flame? :O) I went to my friends house last month who has a 3 month old and she wasn't using a bumper. Well the little girl keeps getting her foot or arm stuck in between the rails. So I feel like a broken leg or arm is much more likely than anything else. Am I wrong here? Please do share any info/experience on this!
As for the quilt, once the baby is bigger you can use it. (On a toddler bed etc).
DS is now using the quilt as a blanket since he is almost two. But before that it looked cute on the wall. I am debating at getting a crib set for this one, we will see.
I'm on the fence about the bumper, but might end up using it. The quilt I can use around the house during feeding or when he gets a bit older and needs a blanket. If worse comes to worse, I can always hang the quilt on the wall as decoration.
Personally, I think it just looks homier and cuter to have those things in there. When all we had was just the fitted sheet, it looked bare and empty.

I actually used my bumber with DS and still do now. The blanket on the other hand is just taking up space.
I think a lot of it is to milk money out of parents
We will just be buying crib sheets and *maybe* a crib skirt to hide the dust bunnies.
I wondered this exact same thing when I started doing research. We opted against doing a crib set. I hand-made the curtains and crib skirt and will purchase coordinating crib sheets and changing table pad. The crib skirt looks great and brings a little softness to the crib. It's also perfect for hiding under-bed boxes under the crib for more storage.
For more softness and fabric in the room, I also made two large (27") floor pillows and a pillow for the rocker. I'm sure we'll get hand-made quilts or blankets at the shower. When it comes time for an official quilt or comforter on the bed (when we turn it into a toddler bed) we can get something then.
That's why we're going with a breathable bumper. And just buying a crib sheet separate. We don't want a crib skirt because our 3 small animals like to hide under there!
Have a bedding set does make decorating easier, though.
This! I can't tell you how many times I have fallen in love with a set, but I just can't justify it because I would not use the bumper or the quilt. The quilt you can use when the baby is older, but I have an aunt that is making us a quilt so I won't be going with a commercially available set anyway.
