NT scans or not?

Maybe this question has already been posted, I might have missed it. Sorry if this is redundant!

Are you doing NT Scans? My mother said she didn't do it with any of her 4 children. She said that she would love the baby no matter what, so why get them?

None of the tests are 100% conclusive and they miss a myriad of other things that can go wrong.

But maybe it would be nice to have another ultrasound? Maybe it would be nice if everything was ok, it would give us so peace?

What do you think? Are you doing it? Why or why not?

Re: NT scans or not?

  • Yes my husband and I decided to do the scan.  1) We were excited to have another u/s.  2) No matter what happens with the scan we would never think of terminating. Our reason for agreeing to do the scan was because we wanted to be better prepared if anything should be wrong.  That way baby can come in to a home ready to accommodate him/her.

    Hopefully that helps!

  • DH and I talked about it, and we're not. While it would be nice to have a "heads up" (and we would NEVER, EVER terminate), it only gives percentages - so why worry for the rest of your pregnancy. And we'll get more ultrasounds throughout the pregnancy because of my previous losses, so I wouldn't do it just for "seeing the baby" either.
  • Sorry about the double posting. I guess I don't know how to do polls very well. Thanks for your patience! Haha...
  • We chose not to because I'm not at a high risk for DS. I just don't see any reason to do unnecessary medical procedures, especially if they're going to check for it in the 2nd trimester anyway.
  • Yes.  Mine is scheduled in a few weeks.

    1) we want to do it because it gives us an additional ultrasound (otherwise we would have to wait until like 20 weeks and I am impatient)

    2) I want to be prepared if something is wrong.  If we get an extraordinarily high reading we will think about doing an amnio to know more

  • We call it IPS here in Canada, but yes, I'll be doing it.  I actually just booked my appointment today.

I was apprehensive about it, and took some time to talk it through with my H this weekend.

I've always considered myself pro-choice, but now that it's me, I don't know that I could make that decision.  Barring any sort of life ending complication, I think my H and I would just like to have the heads up so that, like a PP said, we could be the most prepared.

Also, I wouldn't be getting my first U/S until 18 weeks, so it is a bit selfishly motivated, as now we get to have one at 12.

  • While I would love to get another u/s w won't be doing it. We didn't with my DDs, the hospital we would have to do it at is an hour away (which isn't a big deal) and I don't think my insurance covers it and I'm such a worrier. I don't want to have to worry more than I already am if something serious were to come back.

  • I voted yes.  It is not an additional U/S for me.  It will be my first u/s and I have it this Friday.

  • I didn't have them <35 y/o, but will be doing it this time around.  My chances of a chromosomal disorder are so much higher now than they were back then.

it's not always a question of whether you would terminate or not.  Some chromosomal disorders that are tested for are not compatible with life.  Some disorders carry medical conditions that need monitoring.  Also, information gained from the NT scan or later quad screen can be used to help rule out more invasive testing if anything is found at your anatomy scan.  the NT isn't the only test that will give you information that can be useful, so I don't think all women need to do it.  But, I would encourage first trimester OR quad screening in the 2nd tri for all women, even if you don't think you would ever terminate a PG.

  • First I need to verify that it is covered by insurance.  If it is not, I will not have it.  If it is, I'll consider it.  It would be my first u/s, so that is appealing, but I do wonder if it will just make me worry more.  I do not want to have an amnio, etc., so the NT scan won't tell me anything conclusively.

I'm not sure what we'll do yet.

  • We aren't doing it. I'm not high risk, and I don't like the way they present the odds. If anything is abnormal, we'd find out at the 20 week anatomy scan.

  • Nope. My insurance doesn't cover it unless you're over 35 and it's over $700 here. No thanks.

  • We are doing it because for us, the results will matter in how we choose to go forward.

  • My sister-in-law got a false positive then had an amnio done. I know I would never do the Amnio so getting a positive would just send me into stress over load. We didn't have it done with out 1st and wont be with this baby.

This is my situation exactly. Except, mine is next Friday. That said, even if it wasn't an additional one, we would still opt for it. We would never terminate, but at least it would give us additional info and if there was something "wrong" we could prepare for it (as much as possible) before LO is born.

This is pretty much our thinking, too. While I'm not considered at risk, I am going to be 31 when this baby is born. It's enough just to have the peace of mind that everything is going well.

We go a week from Friday! I can't believe it's coming up so quickly!

  • We're doing it. I have a cousin with Down's Syndrome so my doctor said we're at greater risk. We personally wouldn't terminate but we would move back to the states to be near family so we'd have some help. We're all alone in the UK and I would feel more comfortable having support.

  • yes we are having it, mostly just for the u/s but also I guess it's good to get that info early.

If risk comes back as high I'll have an amnio. It would affect how we will proceed with the pregnancy.

  • Yes, for three reasons:

    1. It will be our first ultrasound and I am very anxious to see this little one

    2. Our OB highly recommends this ultrasound because it can help them determine if there is anything very wrong with the baby so they can take the appropriate measures to make sure everything goes smoothly and when the baby is born it has what it needs in the delivery room.

    3. Even though we wouldn't terminate depending on the results, I am a planner and I need to know if this child will have special needs so I can prepare in advance both mentally and with work/daycare/family etc.
