We got an appointment for Wednesday now that DS's fevers are becoming more and more frequent without any obvious cause.
What was your experience like? More blood draws?
I have to take him by myself because DH took Friday off for our trip and he can't take off anymore time.
Re: Immunolgist
Both P & M have seen immunology. M's was for recurrent fever with no known cause. The fellow took an extensive history, etc. Then the head MD came in and asked some questions.
They took A LOT of lab work. They also wanted her CBC done by hand, by a pathologist, not a machine. To see how many 'abnormal' cells she had, since a previous machine test said she had an excessive amount.
THey also drew for some genetic diseases which took 2+ months to come back.
We never got an answer so we were sent to oncology bc immunology could not rule out pre-leukemic state. Oncology ruled it out & has now sent us back to immunology.
We just get her labs done in the ER (have a letter/lab slip from VCU) whenever she has a high fever, to try and help figure out WTF it is.
Andrew sees one. They did a blood draw. His immune system is below normal but not super low. They checked to make sure his vaccines "took" too.
Andrew is the opposite - he almost never gets fevers. Even with really bad infections, he would just be a little warm.
When DS was 12 months old he started having recurrent fevers with no symptoms for about 2 months. He would have a fever for 5 days of 103 degress with no symptoms. He would be fine for a week or two and then the fever would come back and be a 103 again for 5-6 days with no symptoms. We had blood work done and his neutrophil count was low on his CBC test. We were sent to an Infectious Disease doctor at Children's hospital. I showed her my calendar of fevers and she said she thought he had Periodic Fever Syndrome--a rare genetic disease. She didn't even look at him before diagnosing this disease, she just saw my calender. She said he would be back within a month with another fever. I asked what if he didn't have another fever and she said he would since she said he had Periodic Fever Syndrome. Well, he never got another fever since August 22, 2010. She ended up doing a ton of blood work that the immulogist would have done so we never saw one. The immunologist just reviewed DS's blood results. We were sent to an hemotologist/oncologist because of his low neutropil count. We had to keep getting blood taken for a few months. He doesn't have a blood disorder or anything. It was a very stressful time. In Febuary DS was diagnoised with Infantile Anorexia--that's a whole different story.
My advice would be to keep a calendar of all your son fevers with the temperatures. I would take his temperature rectallly a few times a day.. Does he act different or sick like during the fevers? My DS acted normal during the fevers.
