C-sections

throwing up after c-section

my c-section wasn't planned, but it wasn't emergency either. the plan was to get induced but upon several ultrasounds at the hospital, baby was confirmed too big and c-section was scheduled for the evening.

the only thing I had that morning was a shake. and they waited till after 5pm to do my c-section. but after surgery I ended up throwing up after they gave me water to drink!

my question is if you were scheduled for c-section and were told not to eat past a certain time, did you still throw up after surgery or not?

Re: throwing up after c-section

  • With my 1st, it wasnt scheduled. I hadnt eaten anything that day and was sent to the hospital to be induced. After endless hours of labor, I ended up with a c/s. They gave me some jello to eat as soon as they had got me to a room and I threw it up. They said it was from the anesthesia.

With my 2nd, it was scheduled. I couldnt eat past midnite of the previous day and my c/s was scheduled for 1pm. They gave me some gingerale and jello at around 9pm that night and I did not throw up. I guess the first time they gave me food too soon.

You had a reaction to the anesthesia.  It is very common.  Some women even throw up during.  Tell the anesthesiologist and s/he will give you medicine to counteract it.  I get extremely nauseated during procedures so I just let the drs. know ahead of time and they give me meds for it.  Problem solved.

  • Mine was scheduled and I too was told not to eat after midnight. I felt very sick after the surgery, but I'm pretty sure it was due to the medication. I didn't eat very much for a few days afterward.

  • I threw up but it had nothing to do with what I ate before surgery (I had 8+ hours between food and surgery).  You have to ease yourself into eating after surgery.  Start SLOW with ice chips and then SIP water slowly, don't take big drinks or chug no matter how thirsty you are or it comes right back up.

  • Immediately following my first c/s I vomited for at least 30 minutes. DH would hold the little thing by my head while the nurse emptied another one and then they would switch buckets. It was horrible. Finally the anesthesiologist came back and put some anti nausea meds in my IV and all was fine. With my second one they put in the anti nausea meds before they were even done closing  me up.

Oh, and I get to have Benadryl as well because the anesthesia makes me itch.

  • I had a scheduled c-section with my boys and I threw up several times afterwards. Like PP said it's a reaction to the meds. I also got VERY itchy and itched for days!!

  • i didn't eat past midnight the night before ( i had oatmeal around 11pm) and DD was born at 8:30am and i still threw up.  the meds made me sick, it was more of a dry heave and i pulled lots of muscles because of my position in the hospital bed--not pleasant.  but i was fine by that night.

  • I hadn't had anything for 32 hours, which was the amount of time in the hospital in labor before the c-section, other than ice chips and I managed to throw up like a champ during the surgery and after.  It was awesome...

  • I didn't have an scheduled or emergency csection...more like failed induction csection. I ate dinner the night before then nothing else, had my c-section at 5pm and threw up anything I ate or drank for almost 2 or 3 hours after.

I know it was a reaction to the anesthetia (sp?) since I had the same reaction when I had my wisdom teeth out when I was younger. Didn't know I could ask for anything to counter act the vomiting, but, now I do!

    Thanks!

  • I actually threw up 2 days after my c-section (also happened to be the first time I tried to eat)
  • I felt really nauseous during my c-section and told the nurse. They added something to my IV and it went away immediately. Later on that night I was super thirsty and tooks some big gulps of water and threw it up right away. They told me to stick to ice chips but I felt fine so I went ahead with the wayter. Big mistake. I was fine the next day.
  • I didn't throw up after my first c-section which was unplanned and had an epidural.

But I did throw up after my RCS which was with a spinal-epidural. They said it was because of the spinal. They gave me a patch behind my ear and that took care of it. (I had fasted from midnight until my c-section at 7:30am and beyond until after recovery...so until about 10:30 or 11am.)

  • My c-section wasn't scheduled but I hadn't eaten anything for about 8 hours before anyways.  A couple hours after surgery I tried eating a popsicle and then about 10 minutes after that threw it all up and then some.  It was awful! A few hours after that I was able to keep my next popsicle down though.

  • I didn't throw up only because my mom went running out to the nursing station asking for anti-nausea meds.

I had a scheduled c/s and it was right when I started eating too.

  • I didn't actually throw up, but I remember during the surgery I was very dizzy, but when I would close my eyes I felt like I was going to be sick. I told one of the nurses and they gave me a medication through my IV so I wasn't sick....so maybe that helped?

This exactly. I've had 4 cs and in the last 3 I've either thrown up during, or right after. It really doesn't matter when you ate last.

With my latest cs I did get nauseous during the cs but didn't throw up.

  • Throwing up is a reaction to the anesthesia.  Itching is a reaction to the morphine they add to your spinal for pain management post operatively.

I threw up during, and all.damn.day afterward.

  • 3 surgeries and I was sicker than a dog. I finally got smart and told the anestheologist before my next 4 surgeries and c/s and they medicated me in advance, and not a single issue since!

  • The last thing I ate was at 8:00 p.m. the night before. Had emergency c-section at 8:00 the next night.  I was really nauseous during surgery.  And afterwards I threw up. A lot.  For about 12 hours.  It was so horrible.  They kept having to bring me more baggies.  So yeah, it was a reaction to the anesthesia.  I ate breakfast about 10 the next morning and everything was fine.

  • Wow, I had no idea puking was so common after a c. Yikes! I felt like I was gonna get sick shortly after they lied me flat on the table. I had a rough time getting the spinal though. They had to call in another person to try to place it. I got stuck many many times. Needless to say I was stressed out! After a bit though it went away. I never felt sick afterwards or after surgery. I actually wondered why they had the yellow puke tub in my room near my bed. Had no idea this was so common. I'm really sorry people have had to endure that.

  • I was fasting for both my c-sections.  With DS1, I did not throw up and was totally fine.  With DS2, I was naseous and puking for at least a day afterwards.

  • I fasted and had a c section first thing in the morning. I barfed my guts out (it literally felt like my guts were coming out of my stomach) for 24-48 hours after, I too had the itches. This reminds me to tell my doc about this.
  • i puked. LOL. i was a scheduled c-section for 12 noon and i did not eat/drink anything from the night before when i went to bed (before midnight). and i still threw up.
  • I didn't throw up, but almost did after I woke up.  It was a reaction to the general.  I am not sure if they gave me something for nausea though, I told them when we were doing health history for my spinal that I threw up from being put under before.

My c section was not planned, but all I ate that day was reeses peanutbutter cups for breakfast.  Ob was very amused by this.

yea thats what they told me. and I did get medication for it in my IV after surgery. was just curious to see your responses!

  • I also got very very itchy after surgery. so much so that my nose peeled! lol.
  • Hope my post isnt too TMI?!

I encountered the same thing during my c section with my ds. I dont do well with anesthesia from previous surgies and have always woken up throwing up. We tell the doctors that I become the exorcist when I come to. lol. Before and after my c section I was still throwing up. I had nothing to throw up since I hadnt eaten since the day before and had been in labor all night. I finally had my c section in the afternoon and had already been throwing up from the epidural. Only thing I could eat at first was ice chips and then I couldnt even hold down and wasnt allowed anymore. The nurses were great though, during my c/s one of the male nurses held the cup next to me while I would dry heave. Im having a scheduled c/s this time and sure I will go through the same thing again.

  • Both times I had a reaction to the morphine and vomited for an hour after surgery.  I was NPO for both surgeries.  They tried to give me Zofran which didn't touch my nausea but Phenergan worked great.

  • I had a scheduled c-section, so I didn't eat anything from the night before on. I threw up a lot of bile and mucous for a few hours after the surgery it was a reaction to the anesthesia, they said it was quite normal. It was like every time I moved or woke up I'd barf a little bit. By that evening I felt better.
