Popping in with a Q re: Gift Ideas...?

I hope this is the right place for this post!
My nephew is turning 2 right away.
He has been evaluated to be lower functioning . Not severely, but somewhere around a 13month level they guess.
He is in the process of starting speech therapy, and undergoing other evaluations to rule out possible causes. But the doctors have thrown out Autism/Aspergers as a possibility - although it's still early.
Well for his birthday, I am at a loss of what to get him.
He doesn't play with any of the toys he does have (his "play" is throwing things against the floor, or throwing contents of the fridge onto the floor). The only time I've seen him show interest in any toys is when I had baby toys with me for DS when I was there visiting, and it was still short lived.
His mom suggested me just getting him new clothes, which is fine too, but not a very fun gift for him.
I really don't want to spend money on something that he won't use/like, and I'm wondering if any of you ladies had suggestions for appropriate toys/gadgets/etc that may be a good fit for children with developmental delays.
I've thought of just buying toys that are geared towards his functioning age, but don't know if that will seem offensive ?

*PS. I'm not trying to say that children with delays/special needs always require different toys, or don't deserve 'regular' toys. But if there is a certain type/brand/line of toy out there that is well suited I'd be interested to know :) *

Thanks in advance !

Re: Popping in with a Q re: Gift Ideas...?

  • I know that Toys R Us has a catalog for differently-abled kids.  The toys are all the same toys sold in the stores, but they're categorized by the needs they meet (social, sensory, gross motor, etc.)  You may be able to peer through that catalog for ideas.  My daughter has Down syndrome and at 6 months, just switched over to her 6 month toys, although she requires some help to sit up and play with them.  Many are toys with big age ranges (6 months - 2 years) so even if it takes her longer (plus, she is TINY) she'll be able to enjoy them for a long time in some way.

    Hope that helps!

  • We just bought our son who is 7 1/2 months adjusted age a leap frog Scout.  You can download songs and put in your nephews favorite stuff and it talks to him and sings to him.  My ds loves it.  And when he throws it to the floor it won't get damaged.  My son is also in the throw things phase.
  • My DS loves his bumpy balls. Ok, that sounded bad! LOL They are the size of a soccer ball and have nubs all over. The brand is Edushape and the 4 pack of different sizes has been great.

That will give him sensory input, and also might motivate him to play catch or roll it back and forth with a partner.

    .
  • What about possibly signing them up for a music program?

Or how about a set of music DVDs like Rock a Bye Baby?

Like PP there is a brochure from TRU for Differently Abled.

How about stuff for sensory exploration?  That may be more homemade than store bought.  You could do containers with different colored rice, and ones with beans.  https://www.suite101.com/content/coloring-rice-for-sensory-play-in-early-childhood-a297408

To my boys:  I will love you for you Not for what you have done or what you will become I will love you for you I will give you the love The love that you never knew
  • thank you guys for the awesome tips !!
I'll have to check TRU for that flyer.
I've also thought of Scout too. We have one to for DS and he loves it. :)
