School-Aged Children

Kindergartener having a HARD time in the mornings...

tell me it gets better!!  Part of it is my fault b/c of the inconsistencies....well, probably all over the problem is my fault!

First day, I walked her in to school and brought her to her classroom.  LEft her at the door and she smiled said bye and walked right in.

Second day, we started her on the bus.  She would not get on so I ended up having to drive her to school.  Walked her in and she was fine.

Third day, she got on the bus :)  YAY!

Fourth day, got on the bus but after school told me she cried a little bit but then stopped when they drove away.

Fifth day, the same as day 4.

Well, yesterday (day 6) I had a room parent meeting in the morning so I drove her to school. She cried once we got in the building and was hysterical when we got to the door.  The teacher held her and brought in the room.

Today, she cried starting at the house, walking to the bus stop and then told me she would NOT get on the bus.  Well, the bus came and she would not get on.  I looked at the other mom and realized that I HAD to make her get on the bus.  I did not want her to think that if she cried she would get her way.  So I had to carry her on the bus kicking and screaming.  Thankfully she stayed in her seat and didn't run after me.  I was in tears.  The other parents there were awesome and told me I did the right thing.  Please tell me I did!!  I emailed her teacher and she said she was crying a little when she got there but she focused on her work she was fine.

Next week I go back to work which I think will actually help.  Her 2 younger sisters will be at daycare- I think it upsets her knowing that they are home with me.  And her dad is bringing her to the bus stop so I won't have to be the one seeing this :(  The consistency should help I think.

Thanks for letting me vent- sorry so long!  ANyone else been through something similar?  She has been in daycare since 6 months old.  WE haven't had issues when leaving her since she was about 2!  She usually loves school.  She tells me every morning now it is boring and they don't do anything fun- I know she loves it though b/c when I pick her up she talks and talks about it.  Its just in the mornings she is pissy.

Re: Kindergartener having a HARD time in the mornings...

  • I get really nervous for DD, she just started 2nd grade but I remember being really scared for her in Kindgarten. She knew absolutely nobody and that scared her, it scared me as well. I stayed in her class until I was kicked out. I helped her make friends by talking to other kids and helping her introduce herself to them. Once she got the hang of it and had a couple of buddies, I would leave.

With second grade we moved to a new district so she had to make new friends again. I did the same thing, except she has to wait in a line outside. So I walk with her to the line and chit chat with the other girls and help her to start conversations with them. Once she's having fun and laughing with the other kids, then It's my signal to go. This is her second week at school, I now just walk her to the line and wait for her buddies to get there. Once they get there I go.

  • Maybe it's just because its a new routine, a new place.  My daughter has anxiety at the beginning of every school year and she's in the 3rd grade.   Just be consistent and once she gets familiar with her new surroundings and new routine she'll be fine.

  • We had an AWFUL time in the mornings, but sounds like you are right..she will prob be better when you go back to work. I was a stay at home mom at the time and her little brother got to stay home with me and she had to go to school:( 1st grade was a bit better but still a rough time of day for us..This year her brother is now in Kindergarten and she is a different child! She actually makes her own lunch and is ready without a fight I don't even have to wake her up..she likes getting up to an alarm and I am LOVIN it.  It will get better just hang in there and she will get used to the new surroundings and routine:)

  • I think the whole school process is just a big adjustment. Some kids need everything to be consistent, and some can deal with a lot of change. I've found that DD is more emotional in the mornings if she's tired, so we're trying much harder to get her to bed at a decent time. She also has a harder time when I drop her off at before school care than if she can ride the bus.
