s/o no-poo - colored hair?

Does anyone do no-poo with colored hair? I don't use other products, but I am vain and I have a lot of gray hair that I color every other month. I just can't stand to look so old at only 30!

Just wondering how it works... I feel like I would at least have to use shampoo to get the color out after I put it on, although I guess I don't know why I really feel that way.

Thanks for any info/advice/stories.

  • I wouldn't recommend it (I haven't tried it, but I'm a hair stylist).  Maybe just try shampooing less often, and just rinse really well in between shampooing.

ETA:  a lot of the professional color lines recommend to not shampoo for 24 to 48 hours, so the color has time to "set".  You just have to rinse well until the water runs clear :-)

  • I would imagine it wouldn't make much of a difference, as I used to color my hair and never used shampoo. In fact, I quit shampooing my hair when I started coloring it regularly, because it was making my hair feel kind of dry and puffy.

  • From what I have read if you do the baking soda it will strip the color from your hair... and quickly. They actually recommend it for removing color from your hair or lightening the color. But not shampooing will help extend the life of the color.  So it depends if you are just rinsing and not shampooing... or regularly using the baking soda.

  • I equate no 'pooing with washing your hair with regular shampoo/conditioner (as opposed to the "for colored treated" shampoos). It will probably fade faster and also hair color might take less time to set as there's no buildup to slow hair dye from working.
