Kaiser - bay area L&D feedback

so we live in the East Bay and we're trying to figure out which Kaiser we want to go to when the baby arrives...Oakland is the closest, but I was also thinking of Walnut Creek and SF. WC and SF are about the same distance for us.

Any feedback from those of you that went to either Oakland, Walnut Creek, or SF?

Thanks!

Re: Kaiser - bay area L&D feedback

  • Delivered both of my boys at Kaiser Walnut Creek, neither time with my actual OB, but had wonderful, supportive, amazing midwives and nurses each time. I was very very happy with both my experiences.

  • I've heard great things about Kaiser WC and actually visited for some monitoring last week--very nice. I know that when they get busy, you may have share a postpartum room. Not sure about Oakland, but would be good to check into.

  • My preference would be for WC, which is a great facility with some excellent practitioners.  Shared recovery is pretty uncommon.

Delivery rooms at Oakland are tiny.  It's a teaching facility, so lots of new OBs who may not be as experience with or open to unmedicated labors as WC.

I don't have any experience with SF.

  • I delivered Lucas at WC and will deliver this baby there as well.  We were really happy with our experience there the first time (spent 5 nights there).

  • I delivered at WC and was happy with my experience. The L&D nurses were great.

  • Delivered both girls at WC, and was incredibly happy.  They even had a special dinner with DD#2, complete with champagne glasses and sparkling cider!
  • I delivered both girls at Kaiser Oakland and was quite pleased with the quality of care I received.  I knew going into it that my regular OB would not be delivering me and was fine with it.  I didn't have a specific birth plan, and didn't feel pressured to do anything I wasn't comfortable doing.

The main reason we chose the Oakland facility was that it was the closest to our house.  DH and I didn't think it would be logical to make the trek to WC or SF because we didn't know when the baby would come.  I couldn't imagine being stuck in rush hour traffic and in labor.  As it turned out, my water broke in the middle of the night with #2 and the contractions came on strong shortly after.  The barely 10 minute drive to Oakland was almost too much for me to handle.
