Pregnant after IF

Need advice...WWYD?

Ok, I'll try to keep this short. Last week OB writes me a script to go to MFM for "Weekly NST's, monitor fetal movement". I call MFM and they need to get a pre auth for it. They call me back this morning and tell me they got approved for the NST but not for the umbilical cord study and BPP, that's in review. I ask why the other stuff is needed and she said "that's what we do, it's part of the test".

I then call OB and get receptionist and ask why MFM is trying to get approval for this other stuff when I thought I just needed NST's. Receptionist calls me back says OB will just do the NST himself at my next prenatal appt next week. MFM(who by the way is EXTREMELY pushy, was when I had issues at the beginning)then calls back and tells me that she worked really hard to get the approvals and got them so I need to come in this week.

I'm under the impression that OB only wants me to get an NST not all this other stuff assuming all is well with NST, so I'm thinking I may jus wait until my OB next week and talk about this with him instead of going for these tests I might not even need...do you agree?? Are BPP's usually a part of NST's?? Thoughts?

  • I am with you on this. I would wait for my OB apt and see what he says. If your OB didn't ask for the additional testing why give in to the pushy MFM. From what previous posters have mentioned a BPP is if you fail your NST. Good luck with whatever you decide on doing!!

  • I would go with the MFM, I feel they are very thorough and experts at what they do. If your OB was an expert at NST he would do them all the time. Just my option good luck

  • I agree... I would wait for the OB and see what he says.... I have no experience with what is a part of NST's, but it sounds like the MFM is kinda outta bounds? Just my opinion though!

  • I think you need to clarify with both offices who is driving the bus as far as your medical care is concerned.  When I was diagnosed with GD, I was feeling caught in the middle between who was in charge of what.  When I asked both offices about it, they both explained that the MFM doc was going to make the diagnosis and treatment decisions, but that the OB would coordinate the care and do the delivery - taking the MFM's advice into account.  The MFM is the specialist, and after having dealt with both docs, I would always trust in the MFM's opinion more than my OB.  It's not that I don't trust my Ob, but honestly, the Ob's aren't the experts on high risk pregnancies, the perinatologists are.

Also, my MFM office has been doing BPP's on me ever since I have started 2x weekly NST's, and I have never had a non-reactive NST, so BPP's are used sometimes even if the NST is fine.  Depending on the schedule, sometimes I even have my BPP done before the NST. I hope all this helps!
