The only time we've used a travel agent was for our honeymoon and we went on a cruise. I don't think it saves money at all. They have to make a profit. Using an agent just takes the headache out of planning all of it.
I agree 100% and since I thrive on the research of it all I don't use them. I think the internet has really devalued travel agents. In the past hotel, cruise lines ect needed TA's to push business their way but with the internet everyone has had to step it up and market themselves more because people are out there searching. I think it's rare that a TA can get you anything you can't do on your own.
What are you planning? I'm always a sucker for trip planning and I'd be happy to so some research.
I never use a TA any more. I have heard though that for cruises they are still good to use but for everything else you're better off finding something yourself on the internet.

We're heading to Huatulco for a wedding and I was trying to figure out if the travel agent or internet would have a better deal. The bride and groom have a travel agent, but they're Canadian and so is their travel agent. When I talked to her, she was telling me that the rate she was quoting the Canadians is for land and air, but since we don't live up there, she could only quote us a land price. I was wondering if a travel agent here could get us a better deal.
