Baptism - Who gets an invite?

So, we're planning B's baptism and I am clueless about this. Who do we invite? Obviously, DH's parents, grandparents, siblings, the godparents...but since my parents are gone and I have no living grandparents either, who from my family gets an invite (note that none are local and all at least 2 hours away)? My mom's sister has always been close to me but has become like a mother to me in these past few months, so I think she will definitely get an invite along with my dad's brother (I am their only neice and close with them). But do I invite our cousins and their families and other extended family? How big do these get? Do I invite our friends or just keep it close family? I feel like my bf would be insulted if I didn't invite her but then again I don't want her to feel pressure driving 3 hours for this. I am so confused!

Re: Baptism - Who gets an invite?

  • Besides the obvious, we invited my aunts & uncles and a few close friends. No cousins. DH's aunts and uncles live in Ohio so, we only sent invites to those that are Catholic. In all reality, it can be as little or as big as you want it. DH didn't want a big to do, but when my aunt had my mothers wedding dress made in a gown for DD to wear, we kinda got suckered into inviting all my aunts and uncles.

  • Luckily all of my family is out of town (4+ hours away) so I didn't feel pressure to invite them and I don't think they were insulted not being invited given the distance.  We kept the invites to the godparents (my aunt/uncle who live in Boston), the grandparents (DH's local, mine from NY), another aunt from Boston, DHs aunt/uncle (local) and a handful of close friends.  We invited some local cousins but I don't think they were able to come.  Had maybe ~20 people total, including some kids.  It really is up to you like PP said to be as little or as big as you want it to be.  If you are having an after-baptism party, the venue can can also limit the number of people you can invite, depending on how big the place is.

This. We didn't want a huge to do, and can't afford it either!

  • Do you have a private Baptism or a Baptism durning your Sunday church service?  In our church they do Baptism during the service on the feast days so we will have a minimum amount of people there my DD's, grandparents, aunts and uncles, cousins and godparents only.
