Anyone else have a baby that refuses to hold their bottle?

My DD is 3 and a half months old. She refuses to hold her bottle. I know she can hold it. She does hold it. But once she realizes that we're not holding it, she drops it. I have pictures of her at 2 weeks old with her hands behind her head while she eats. She usually eats like that. It was so cute then, but how can I get her to hold it when she realizes I don't have a hold anymore??

Re: Anyone else have a baby that refuses to hold their bottle?

  • Violet does this too.  I honestly don't mind; she'll only be a baby who needs me to feed her for so long!

  • It's very rare that they are fully capable at 3 months to hold their own bottle. I think you are being a bit unreasonable expecting that. Typical age is about 6 months.

  • Refuses? I don't think most babies can hold a bottle at this point. Mine grabs it and holds on, but still needs me to hold it for balance.

  • I agree - 3 1/2 months is pretty early to expect a baby to hold their own bottle. I'm going to be kind of sad when LO prefers holding her bottle to me feeding her...

  • Lila puts her hands on the bottle, but I don't think she has the strength to actually support the weight of the bottle and hold it in her mouth at this age so I contently hold it for her. Just give it more time.

  • Uhh, why would you want DD to hold her bottle?
  • My son acted like he was holding his bottle when he was 3 months, but he never really held it by himself til he was about a year old, I think.  I always wanted that cuddle time and I loved holding his bottle.  I still held it even after he could, unless we were in a hurry to get somewhere and I needed to let him drink it in the stroller or car seat.

    Yes, please explain...

  • Depending on the feeding, mine loves to hold her bottle--I think because she hates when I take it away to burp, so she gives it the big death grip!

Seriously sometimes it is a fight to get it away from her--she doesn't hold it the entire time, but she definitely can feed herself when she wants too! Typically it is the morning before work, when I have LESS time to feed her :)

DS was the same.  I think an expectation like this is a bit ridiculous.  Don't be surprised if they don't walk at a year old either...

  • DD can hold her bottle if it's half empty, but I'd really rather her not because she always yanks it out of her mouth and then gets mad because her bottle's gone  Stick out tongue

  • At work 4 of us had babies within a month. My DD was the 3rd one. All of us are back at work and all 3 other moms are talking about how baby hold their bottle. So I was thinking that maybe she wasn't on track. Idk.

They're probably lying trying to win the mommy olympics. Your baby is perfectly fine and sounds like is right on track. I would take whatever they say with a grain of salt and it reminds me of this,

You're just jealous because my kid speaks Mandarin already and yours only knows a couple words in Spanish.

Well Dora has to be good for something. Bram must watch Ni Hao Kai-Lan.

Of course not. TV? Can't you get autism from that?

Have you seen any of the other mompetitions? I love them. They are hilarious.

  • Your co-workers are either lying or stretching the truth. It is an unreasonable expectation that a child that young could feed themselves. I know this from both personal and professional experience.

In the child cares I have worked in, the only children who were holding the bottles on their own were those who were much older (usually around crawling age) and even some of those babies were not capable of doing it yet.

My DD is 4 months old, and while she has a new found respect for her hands (as she recently found them and their many uses), she doesn't know how to hold her bottle on her own yet. While she may reach out and put her hands on her bottle while I am feeding her, she clearly lacks the awareness or control to be able to fully feed herself without assistance. I have of course allowed her to try holding the bottle on her own when she reaches her hands out and tries to do it on her own, but this is more of a learning experience about her hands than it is a way to get her to feed herself.

I wonder if what they are referring to is the idea that the baby reaches their hands out towards the bottle and attempts to grasp it. Sure they may be able to hold it for a few seconds, but it is a far cry from being able to feed themselves.

My advice is to cherish the time while they still need you. Soon enough they will want their independence and want to walk, dress, and feed themselves, and we will all long for the days when they relied so much on Mommy. :)

  • This morning I was feeding Reese--and she was really playful like she is EVERY morning, and she was holding the bottle with her feet--her hands were clasping my hair.

I wish I had enough time for a picture--she is just that talented!
