TV in LO's room?

I was on another board and honestly was shocked to see that someone had a tv in their LO's room (kid under 2). I am definitely not anti tv but am I the only one who thinks this is insanity?

And I know their will be more than one person to say "eh, I dont judge others or care what they do," because this is pretty typical reply on here. Im not asking if you care what she is doing but I am asking if you would consider it?

  • We don't even have (or want) a tv in our bedroom, so I definitely wouldn't consider putting one in DD's.

  • No.  But we are the rare family that only have 1 tv in the whole house, in the living room.  I'm hoping to keep it that way.  Growing up we had more tv's then people and it always irritated me, we didn't spend much time together and I want my family to be different.
  • No way.  Our kids won't have a TV in their bedroom.  My husband would do it but I feel really strongly about it so it's a no-go.

    Same policy for computers.

  • Nope. We're pretty insistent on only having one TV in the house, and it doesn't even have cable.

But, I'm still guilty of letting DD watch stuff on my laptop in other rooms occasionally. Netflix streaming is a wonderful invention.

  • No, I don't think we'll ever put a tv in his room.  We don't even have one in ours.

  • NOPE! We have one TV and it has no tv channels. We do have Netflix though. One of the best things DH and I did IMO was make the rule that we will never have TV in our bedroom. When we first moved in together it really set a nice tone I think. I just don't like the idea of it inj DS's bedroom eather.

Honestly I don't want it in bedrooms at all...I'll never say never I guess...I mean who knows if I will change my mind by teenage years. But even then I really would like to live in a house where we never have more then one TV and am really striving for that.

My BIL has a TV in every room.  My nephews are 6 and 18 months old and both has TV in their rooms. I think my 18 month old nephew had one since he was born! And yes they always have the TV's all on. His wife says they often spend evenings "relaxing" and each watching what they want separately, she will even have the baby watching his own TV. They are a big TV family needless to say..none of my buissness but when I saw a TV is my nephews room at 3 months and she told me she would die without it I was a bit confused.

The thing is I will occasionally turn on something from Netflix for DS.  Not a lot but it does happen on crazy days. I'm not 100% against TV, I just don't think it needs to be a huge part of life...just like anything else. like that. One TV in the house is enough for us.

Yea.. nope. And I have no problem saying I judge people who put a T.V. in their LO's bedroom, especially if they are under 2.

eta -- Oops, is it bad that my first post on this board is judgy? Sorry! But it's true. (Today was my first official day at home!)

    No!  And welcome!

We have a tv in our bedroom - doesn't mean Daniel is getting one.  Parents get to do lots of things children don't. lol

  • I can see this.  If you live in a small house and want to have two tvs.  If you are nursing your toddler and want to watch TV while you do it.  Just because you have a tv in a young child's room doesn't mean you turn it on for them.  We have 2 TV's, but we also have 3 living areas.  If I only had one living area, I would still have two tvs.  I would be more opposed to having one in a grade school child's room than in a young child, since they can't turn it on.
  • I'm not a fan of TVs in kids rooms. Growing up I wanted one and saved babysitting money for it and my mom still wouldn't let me have one. I didn't understand why then but I get it now and my kids won't have TVs in their rooms either. My mom gave us each a 13 inch TV for Christmas senior year of HS so we would have one to bring to the dorms the following year and I'll probably do the same. Until then I want to be able to easily monitor and control any screen time (TV, video games, computer, etc).

  • The only way she gets one is if she gets a job and buys it herself.

  • DS does not have a tv in his room for a lot of the reasons PPs mentioned.  Plus, I would be afraid he would knock it down on his head somehow.  I don't know if that's just me being crazy, but tvs are heavy (even flatscreens) and the kid already has a big scar from pulling a lamp onto his head.

  • No, our children will not have a TV in their room unless they get a job and buy it themselves. I did have a TV in my room when I was in college(went to local school and lived at home).

I was a nanny for a family that had a 18 month old and a 3 month old who shared a room. They had a TV in their room because "the 18 month old would not go to sleep without it." They started letting him watch TV on the couch to go to sleep then moving him to his bed at night.  Then they decided they wanted to put him to bed and be able to watch what they wanted so they put a tv in his room.  I NEVER turned the TV on in his room even for nap time and he slept fine for me.

  • Guess I'm in the minority here but I would put a TV in LO's room. I had one growing up, we have one in our bedroom (we have 3 TV's currently hooked up all with their own cable boxes). I would put one in his room with limited access to watching it but I see nothing wrong with watching a program in the evening then reading a book, saying prayers, and going to bed (at school age). Or even watching a show in the morning when he wakes up (again, school age child). I'm also going to be putting together his playroom and will put a TV in there so he can play video games (when he's older) or watch shows in there.

I would allow his own computer too if I could figure out a way to monitor it.

However, I'm not in a hurry to put one in his bedroom any time soon though.

I have time to figure this all out as he's only 8 months - nothing is set in stone.

  • My 9 year old has a tv in her room Surprise. I would never consider putting one in a two year olds room though. My DD got hers when she was 7 for Christmas. We are still able to control and monitor her television time (which is limited) because we are involved parents that pay attention to our children.
  • No.  When they are older (teens), I probably won't care about them having a television.  No computers in the bedroom, though.

We don't have a TV in our bedroom but there has been one or two times when I have wanted one - i.e. When DH hurt his back last Summer, it would have been nice for him to have had one.  When he and I got the stomach flu last winter, would have been nice to have one.  But those rare occasions haven't been enough yet to prompt me to get one.

We used to have a TV in our bedroom and it never affected our love life, which is a major concern for a lot of people, I think.  I digress - No for the kids, especially those younger than the teen years!

  • We have a tv in our living room, and just bought a new one for our bedroom a few months ago (we didn't have one in there for about 3 years).

We moved our older tv (in an armoire) into the playroom, we don't even have it hooked up right now, but we will probably hook it up eventually for princess movies, and possibly video games down the road.

We really like having a tv in our bedroom.  DH likes to stay up later than I do, and this way I can still snuggle him around 10pm, and he can stay up until 1am or so watching tv.  I hate going to bed alone.

My DD won't have a tv in her bedroom until she's a teenager, at least.

Exactly the same for us as well.  When we built our house last year, we specifically didn't put a cable jack in the "kids" bedrooms.

  • Not a mum yet but will be a sahm when I am.  I do not plan on having a tv in my kids bedroom. like pp said I want to be able to monitor screen time.  I don't even want one in my our bedroom.  Once in a while we will have a lazy day and watch a movie on the laptop in bed but that is once in a great while!

  • My husband and I have the debate about putting a tv in our daughter's room when she's older. I don't want her to have one (we don't have one in our room either and I never had one growing up), but my husband would like her to have one. I am really not on board. It's totally unnecessary for us. I'm still not even sure about a computer. I don't think she'll need one of those in her room either. Eh. We'll see if I change my mind later on, but I don't think I will.

  • Not at that age, no.

When they get older I don't mind. I had a TV in my room as a preteen. I never was one of those kids who sat at home parked in front of the TV though, so it wasnt an issue.

  • DD has one. My mom was getting rid of a tv, so we stuck it in her room. No cable or box to get channels - there's a dvd player hooked up so she can watch caillou or barney or whatever.

  • No TV's until teenagers...and please parents remember that if you have HBO, Showtime, etc. so does your kid!  I had a TV in my room when I was a teen and saw some stuff I should not have!  Needless to say we do not and will not have those channels.

And NEVER a computer for the kids in the bedrooms - this is just asking for trouble in today's world.

  • No. We have a TV in our finished basement rec room for sports and in our room, that's it-nothing in a space that LO is in regularly. If my kids want a tv in their room they can do it when they get their own place-DH and I were both raised with that philosophy and we are passing it on to our kids as well.

  • Absolutely no way, not in my house.  We have a single tv in the basement family room, and a computer monitor in the living room where DD can watch shows on Netflix on occasion.  She will never be allowed a tv in her room at any age (at least under 18), especially not as a toddler.  This is even one of those questions the pedi asks (and you'd get a disapproving frown and a lecture if you answer yes).

  • No way!  We have only one tv in our whole house.  I think tv in the bedroom is a bad idea for adults, let alone for children.
