picking up finger foods...

I have been trying to give my son some small food to pick up and eat...sometimes he wants to do it and other times he is not so interested. One of the issues is that the food is too slippery for him to grasp it. What have you all done to avoid this issue?

Re: picking up finger foods...

  • he perfected the art with puffs. dry, but get sticky helping it out a little

  • I haven't done it, but I've heard that you should crush up some cheerios and roll the food in them before giving them to LO.

  • He loves the puffs! Has been able to pick those up two at a time!

I have heard folks mention the cheerio dust -- but wasn't sure if it was crushed up cheerios or something else!

     thanks!

  • How long/frequently have you been trying? We are doing BLW with DS and after the first week or so of offering fruits and veggies once per day, he got really good at picking stuff up. I say keep trying and he'll get it soon.

I've also figured out that items with skin are easier, like peaches and apples. I guess the skin gives him a little more traction.

  • puffs are perfect for practicing.  they are light and dry.
  • It takes practice.  Like a PP, we do BLW. Tiny foods, like black beans, are hit-and-miss for LO to pick up, but he's a pro at things like stick-shaped bell pepper strips, half a carrots, broccoli floret, and pre-loaded spoons.
