Miscarriage/Pregnancy Loss

Question for those who have miscarried.

I was told today by a DR I have never met and who has never examined me that I was miscarrying today (over the phone).

I started spotting last Tuesday approx 5wk. Spotting bright red. But I've never used more than a thick panty liner - it's been off and on. I've had no cramps - no pain - passed no clots. And it's went from bright red to brown to pink to bright red.

In the ER they told me I was very dehydrated and could have a threatened miscarriage.

I was suppose to have an ultrasound w/ this DR tomorrow but he's told me I'm miscarrying and to just come in next monday for blood work to see if the miscarriage is done. ?! But he has never examined or saw me - only consulted w/ the ER DR over the phone?! No one in his office has ever examined me. They did do blood work on Tuesday and on Thursday where they were both at 117 HCG - but i've heard of dehydration making you plateau before going up.

I am now approx at 6 wk.

Any advice would be great. I currently feel ok?! Just spotting?! Right now not even really spotting. :/

Again any advice would be great. :/ Thank you!

  • That is bizarre.  I think you need an exam.  I would call a different doctor and set that up.  You are early, so it can be hard to tell, but they should definitely do a pelvic exam and an u/s.  New doctor is in order.

I am sorry for your pain and uncertainty, and I hope your baby ends up being okay.

  • It does sound bizarre. But they are probably going off of your HCG levels. At 5-6 weeks, they should still be rising fairly quickly. They start to plateau when you start getting into the thousands .To have no rise in 48 hours, and a fairly low #, is a pretty good indication of a miscarriage (I am so sorry).

I never had any signs or symptoms of m/c with mine - just slow-rising HCG levels. I know it's so hard to grasp, particularly when you are feeling fine.

You Dr. is right when he says there is nothing they can do. Bringing you in for an u/s might be helpful to rule out an ectopic, but at this point, there's not much you can do but wait it out.

My thoughts and prayers are with you.

  • I am so sorry that you are going through this :( I would definitely insist on an exam and an ultrasound! There is no reason to continue worrying and wondering... there are some women who bleed during pregnancy and end up with a healthy baby, so I'm very surprised that your doctor would say that. I would definitley be finding a new doctor regardless!

Good luck!! I hope that all is ok!

  • I would insist on an exam, if that doctor won't do it go to a different one.

  • Did ER do an ultrasounds?  Or was that just over the phone?  I miscarried at 4 weeks.. they didn't do anything. I had bright red bleeding and they did a blood draw and it showed that my HCG level had dropped dramitcally. So they kept doing blood draws until my HCG level was under 5 and then they told me to watch for any severe pain and I passed everything at home.

They did 2 ultrasounds in the ER - said everything looked normal but that they couldn't really see anything and thought it was too early to see anything being that I was approx 5 wks basted on my LMP.

  • The general rule of thumb is that you need to have a beta of 5000 to see something on the ultrasound. I don't want to be the bearer of bad news, but betas that plateau for 48 hours are definitely not a good sign. I would mentally begin to prepare for the worst but at least ask for another beta draw.
