grocery shopping vs food storage size

DH and I had a discussion over the weekend about how no matter how big my pantry is it will never be big enough.  There are only 3 of us and already we are busting out of food storage space.  After I grocery shop I can't fit anything else in our freezer, fridge, or pantry.  Anyone else?  Do I just buy too much?

I guess a similar question is do you buy the same food for all of you or do you buys special items for each of you?

  • I buy special things for everyone.  DH likes different cheese for his sandwiches than I do, I buy different "bars" for Walter than  I do for the 2 of us, I buy TOO MUCH bread: hot dog buns, hamburger buns, sandwich bread, english muffins and Naan that I like for snacks/dinner sometimes.  I buy different yogurt for the little than I do for DH.

  • I buy the same things for everyone, except milk since E still needs whole milk. I have yet to fill my pantry/ fridge since we moved in May, but I feel like if we had that much food at once, it would go bad before we could get to it. I also dont buy any prepackaged meals, so that might be why. Also, we just dont have the budget for it. I do keep the fridge pretty stocked w/ bread and frozen veggies tho. And ice cream :)

  • We have a good-size pantry and a full-size extra freezer in the garage, without those we would never have enough room! I need to clean the pantry, it's getting pretty full and I know a lot of it is old stuff. I do run out of room in the fridge sometimes.

I mostly buy the same food for everyone, but I buy goat milk for Max and some natural kids' salmon sticks that he likes.

  • Our deep freeze is always pretty stocked, our fridge freezer i just keep things we use regularly; ice cream, waffles, frozen veggies, frozen juice so it's easy to grab.  I also have 3 large shelving units in the garage for my overstock/stockup items, in the kitchen pantry I keep what we use regulary; or 1-2 of items.  Our fridge gets pretty stocked each week with my normal shopping; breads, milk, yogurt, lunch meats/cheese, etc.  W gets whole milk and the boys get different yogurts then us, but aside from that it is all the same.

  • Well, for 4 of us (one only being 3 months old) we have inside pantry, garage pantry, and 2 upright freezers. Yeah, they can get full when we buy in bulk.

DD likes my yogurt, and I found smaller versions for her to eat. Mostly we eat all the same things, and the only time I buy specialty items is when I have snack day at preschool.

  • Our pantry is full - I finally have a shelf in the garage but I will only put drinks or jar stuff out there.  We also have a full upright freezer in the garage - we couldn't survive without that.  Especially because I make and freeze spagetti sauce, chicken parm, chili, and other stuff.  I also freeze a lot of bread and meat from costco.

Mostly it is the same, but I do buy crunching blocks for E, some snacks for the adults that she doesn't like (or doesn't get offered), and different cereals.

  • We more or less all eat the same thing, although certain things we don't give to DS yet.  The pantry is always pretty full, as is the freezer.  I wish we had more freezer space and one day we might get another one for the garage.  I have some shelving outside in the garage for canned goods (aka my stockpile).

  • We mostly fill our garage chest freezer, large pantry, and house fridge with just the two of us. Getting the chest freezer has made my life so much easier since we can do bigger shopping trips less frequently and stock up. We've always shopped at Costco and buy things in bulk when possible. No idea what we'll do when there are 3...I suspect I'll just find new places to stash stuff. Linen closet? Guest room closet? =)
