LO and TV

How much does your LO watch???? Be Honest here!

Re: LO and TV

  • ? None?

We have the TV on in the background sometimes (especially if DH is watching a game) but they don't have any actual TV time. They are attracted to the lights of the TV though and will turn towards it if not otherwise occupied.

  • None except sports because tivoing sports is lame. I don't really watch tv anyway, so it's just not on. If it is and he watches, I try to distract him but if he watches a little glee I'm okay with it. We don't do any kids shows though. They annoy me.

Same here, although sometimes if I'm working on the computer or watching something and she just wants to be held she will turn towards it. And we did watch some chip n dale together the other day. :)

  • I never have the TV on for myself during the day, because my 2-year-old is pretty obsessed with it.  He watches a show while I shower in the morning and another show in the early evening right before dinner.  DD usually ends up watching also, because she likes the lights and sounds.

This. For the most part. I've had my moments when he's crying and I really need to say, get the pot off the stove, so I turn his bouncy seat toward the tv, as soon as I come back from the kitchen I make him stop watching. So I would say, a couple minutes a day?

  • None but we don't really watch it either so it's easy. We don't have cable or even a converter box. We'll watch a DVD less than once a week. Sometimes DH will play video games.

  • My daughter LOVES baseball.  She giggles screams, waves her arms and kicks her legs when watching the games.  I don't know if it is the sounds of the fans or the crack of the bat,but it is probably just the movement and the colors.  Her favorite team is the Colorado Rockies and I swear she knows which team is which because she cheers louder for the rockies.  LOL  I freely admit to putting on the game (I recorded one) when she is fussy with her teeth and it distracts her from her sore gums.  So maybe she watches 30 minutes of baseball a day.  Flame away.

  • I personally watch 30 minutes of TV a day, other than that, it's off. So if I'm feeding her while my 30 minutes is on, I guess it's background for her.  I don't let her *watch* it but I'm sure she sees and hears it.

I did take her to a movie yesterday though.  I expected her to sleep by she was awake the whole time and at times I held her facing the screen.  I wasn't happy about doing that but I didn't want her fussing and pissing off the other patrons.

  • she loves wonderpets!  I think it's the singing.  My husband has the tv on in the background ALL THE TIME. Sometimes she seems to be watching, sometimes she couldn't care less.

  • we watch a lot of tv and so she occasionally will turn to watch it but usually is playing with her toys that are generally the farthest away from the tv. however, she is a fan of the today show and she loves football. ;)

  • I NEVER put my DS in front of the TV. I was always staunchly opposed.

DD? She watches at least a 30 minute Mickey Mouse Clubhouse in the a.m. when we are all getting ready. She sits in the RNP or exersaucer and coos and giggles at all of the colors and sounds.  Also, a little Baby Einstein here and there. She absolutely LOVES it.

I don't know why I was ever so anal about it with my DS.  :)

  • Oh and if you have OnDemand they have a bunch of really great baby videos that aren't very long, but seem to get a rise out of my Cece.  We will sit on the couch and she'll stand on my lap and belly laugh. Hilarious.  :)

  • I am one of those people who keep the tv on for background noise, even I am not actively watching it during the day. Neither does DD. I have noticed some things she pays attention to, but she watches tv like, well, a baby. As in, she likes shows with bright colors and music (especially classic cartoons like Tom and Jerry or something because it is no voices, just colors and lights and classical music and sound effects). And she also likes the news, again, because she is a baby. She likes a big face talking directly at her. She loves Brian Williams, but so do I... Wink

I would say she "watches", more like glances or looks that direction 10 minutes or less per day, and that is a stretch, even though it is on. I never, ever turn her towards it or set her up to actually watch. She glances at it when it catches her attention (cartoons or the news), but I take that as MY cue that I need to stop watching and start interacting with her.

  • I swore DD wouldn't watch a bunch of TV but I often have it on in the background in the afternoons and it will sometimes catch her attention.  She really likes That 70's Show, for some reason?!  I've turned on a kid show (Tom & Jerry or Phineas & Ferb) two or three times and put her in front of it on her activity mat two or three times when I absolutely had to get something done.

I feel like I'm fighting a losing battle with the TV anyway, though, because my mom has it on all day when she watches DD two days a week and so does the daycare provider that has her one other day.  I guess in the grand scheme of things, it's relatively low on the harmful scale.

  • We have the TV on all the time when home.  Sometimes C will "watch" something that catches her attention but her toys are generally more exciting.  I've only once intentionally set her infront of the TV to occupy her...and I turned on a history channel show (I really need to figure out what channel children's shows are on).  It was only for about 10 minutes when we got home so I could get her bottle and diapers taken care of from daycare.

  • My LO is a huge fan of Burn Notice and 30 Rock. Seriously.
  • I won't lie my DS is a little couch potato. He watches TV in the morning while we're getting ready for work and he watches it at night before bed and LOVES it. He likes Blue's Clues the best and Bubble Guppies. When he freaks out in his car seat in the car we put on one of those shows on the ipad and he calms down. Judge all you want, I don't plan on him being home all day watching TV when he gets older.
