Upstate NY Babies

C has Croup.

I worked all day yesterday at the airshow and by the time I got home Claire had an occassional "barking" cough.  By 9pm, she was pretty sick - fever, losing her voice, deeper breathing, coughing more, vomiting.  I figured it was Croup and took her in this morning.  She was prescribed a steroid and should be better in a couple of days.  The kicker?  The dr. (not the normal one) said that if E gets it, "he'll just stop breathing" because it's much worse for babies under 6months. I assume maybe a step was skipped or lost in translation but  I'm really worried.  Spoke to the pharmacist and he said that it's not as bad as the doctor made it seem.  Still worried.  I may actually send E to my parents for the night to get him away from C.  Right now he's at daycare.

Apparently it's too much to ask to have 2 consecutive months dr. free for my kids....totally frustrating.

Re: C has Croup.

  • Oh, what the doctor said is scary! I am glad you talked the the pharmacist though. Healthy thoughts for E!

  • I hate when pedi's, or any doctors, pull the Fear of God crud. It doesn't really help you at all. Glad the pharmacist was a bit more reassuring. I'd probably send E to your parents so that you can focus on C getting better. Croup is worse at night. Hope she gets over it quickly.
  • I've been googling...and this time it's helped calm me down a bit.  The dr. was not a native English speaker so I *think* he may have just tried to convey it's just harder for a baby to breathe and not that babies just stop breathing.  That's what I'm going with anyway.  Until then, I am cleaning and spraying Lysol like a mad woman.

  • Poor C! I hope she feels better soon. From your second post I know exactly which Dr. you are talking about. We saw him when Belle's belly button was infected. He tied it off saying her umbilical cord didn't fall off completely. It caused more problems and we had to take her to Childrens because the skin in her belly button grew around the string. The doctor's at childrens gave each other looks that basically said that doctor was an idiot. Don't let him get to you. We do everything in our power to stay away from him and Dr. D.

  • Oh my goodness, I hope she is feeling better soon! Poor C. I would probably send E to your parents too, and be spraying Lysol everywhere. Glad you were able to figure out what the dr was trying to say. My goodness, that is quite a difference.

  • Oh no D! You guys can't ever seem to catch a break! Feel so bad for C always being sick! :( That is really scary. I know the midwife at my Dr has given us a huge scary lecture on how bad croup is and that we shouldn't even let the baby around any adult that hasn't had the whooping cough booster. Hope she's better soon and that E doesn't get it!

  • I picked E up from daycare and they said he hasn't been acting like himself so I'm taking him in this evening.  I would feel terrible if he has it and was at daycare.

Thanks for all the well wishes for C & E.

  • Hope that they are both feeling better soon!  The steroid shot really helped E when he had it last winter.

  • I took E to the doctor this evening and was able to see our regular ped.  She said he looks like he may have the start of a cold but told me to watch for signs of additional signs and she prescribed him meds in case he gets bad as she said Croup hits fast.  She said it could take 4 to 5 days for it to develop upon exposure so we're looking at Thursday or Friday to be in the clear.

She also smirked when I told her the other doctor made me nervous and she said, "Sometimes he makes me nervous with the things he says and I have a medical background....don't worry, he won't stop breathing."

    Thanks again!
