C-sections

Tip for plus sized c-section mamas...

My incision is unfortunately covered by the dreaded belly flap. And of course this is a breeding ground for bacteria even when you're NOT recovering from a surgical incision. The nurses may give you the gauze pads to tuck under your belly to keep the woundsite dry. Well a doc @ my practice who was on call when I was being discharged said I should actually try a maxi pad (the super thick cheap ones that aren't individually wrapped. Just leave the paper on it) The gauze was working just fine for me but tonight I decided to give it a try & boy am I glad! It actually feels so much better than the gauze & covers more of the wound site. And by it being a thick maxi pad it also offers some extra cushion (I have staples). So just a weird tip I thought I'd pass along, if in a few days I find that it actually hinders & doesn't help, my apologies and I'll be back to retract this post lol

  • Congrats to you on your LO. Love the name Eden BTW! My doc actually recommended this too. Worked like a charm for me too.

  • I also stuck a fat maxi pad under the flap! It worked great.

  • I never thought of a pad, but one of the doctors at the hospital suggested a towel, so I just rolled up a hand towel or face cloth and used that and it seemed to work well.  Luckily no infection which I was terrified of getting because of the flap!

  • They actually had me do this while I was still in the hospital.  I just used the pads they had there and they gave me some extra to take home.

  • Oh well I'm glad it's more universally known then! I thought this as some magical secret they had been hiding because I had never heard of it before! Lol. But that was always one apprehension about having a c-section was the incision. I'm upset it took 4 days for someone to suggest it to me but better late than never I suppose.

  • I have an up and down incision from my belly button down about 6 inches...and I did have an infection, but I did the same thing after my C/S because the gauze and whatnot just would not stay, and the pad didnt bunch, and since my underwear were hitting the incision I used the adhesive to keep the pad in place.

  • I didn't personally care for the maxi pad & I used burp cloths/ cloth diapers for mine.. it felt softer & more comfortable for me without the adhesive. But yes.. if you've got a flap definitely keep something over it. I was even able to hold mine like many mentioned using a pillow when I coughed/sneezed-- 2 in 1!

  • I was told to put the maxi pad on my incision the day after my c-section.  They made me so worried about infection that I wore one there for probably 3 weeks pp.  I'm sure I could have stopped sooner but I liked having that barrier keeping the incision from rubbing on anything.

  • 2 more tips:
    1.  Blow dry your incision after showering to get it completely dry.
    2.  If you don't want to use a maxi in there you can use one of those disposible liners for public changing pads.
