Breastfeeding

she screamed from 11pm to 5am.. my fault???

i am so upset, my little girl could not settle down last night from 11-5am,  we tried everything,  bottles of breast milk,  swaddle, paci, swing, rock and play, vibrate seat,  nursing basically the entire time, burping, changing, walking, singing...

NOTHING worked.  She finally wore herself out around 5am after being awake the entire time, is that normal for a 4 week old?

We could get her to settle for a few minutes, start to fall asleep and then all the sudden for no reason she would burst into hysterics. (while holding, rocking, swinging, no matter what we did,  she even nursed and kept throwing her head back)

could it be my fault? something i ate?

i was so close to popping a formula bottle into her mouth last night, i was so tired and needed a break after hours of both of us crying.

but i held strong.  I just dont know what to do,  she has has about 3-4 nights like this in the past week or so, but this was by far the worst.

could it be something I am eating or drkining?  or could i be over feeding her to the point she is getting an upset stomach?  I nurse on demand..

  • Try infant gas drops (mylicon) - they work wonders.  Some babies are colicky, some babies have periods where they are colicky... it's hard to say.  Try laying her down earlier tonight.  Sometimes babies, like adults, don't deal well when overtired.  Try 730 or 8pm.  Do you ahve a good night routine? We do bath, nighttime diaper and cream, jammies, nurse, swaddle, and sleep (we use a paci too).  Also - did you try holding her up at a 30-45 degree angle for 30 mins-1 hr after nursing?? Do you have a swing? That can hold them up at the right angle if she's developing silent acid reflux.

  • Lurker here.  My pedi told me that sometimes if mom limits dairy intake that it can help miminize gas for baby.  I had a night like you described (after our nightime routine) a few nights ago, so I tried cutting out dairy, and the next night, it made a huge difference after just one day.  She slept soundly 2 1/2-3 hours between feedings.  It's worth a try.

  • When LO was around 1.5-2 months we had a time like this, you are not alone.  IT SUCKED!  So after a few nights I called the pedi, she reassured me that it wasn't me and that sometimes babies just cry, and cry A LOT.  One thing she went through was some foods that I might not think would make her upset but they have a tendancy to do so.  Chocolate (WHOOPS!), greens of all sorts (lettuce and such) were the two that got me into trouble.  I didn't think about chocolate being caffine...Rest assured that it is a temporary attitude and that things will settle back down.  In the mean time, I tried to find someone to keep an eye on my LO for at least an hour in the evenings so I could go for a walk/to the garden or just take a long shower.  That seemed to help me rejuvenate so I didn't feel like I was going to go crazy.  Good Luck dear.

  • My LO was colicky from 5wks -8wks.  It was the longest 4wks of my life!  Gas drops combined with sleeping in the Rock N Play  worked wonders as well as putting him down to bed earlier, around 7:30pm.  Make sure you are burping her thoroughly.  Good luck!

  • DD went through this phase from about 3 weeks - 9 weeks.  We used gripe water and gas drops and they helped a little.  We also used a hot water bottle.  I would fill it with pretty warm water, lay it on my stomach and lay her on her tummy on top of it.  It worked really well.  The hot water bottle was kind of a pain so I bought this.

  • In addition to the mylicon, Gripe Water also saved my life on several occasions! Good luck and hang in there!
  • Throwing her head back could be a sign of reflux. I'd read up on infant reflux and see if she has any other symptoms. If she does, talk to your pedi. DD has been on Zantac since she was 4 months old, it's been a life saver.

  • wow, I am so sorry. The others have already offered good advice. Some will disagree with what I'm about to say, but if you are nursing every feeding of every day, at 4 weeks I really do not think it is a big deal to give your baby a bottle as a break for one of those feedings (i.e. the baby will still learn to BF). Just try to make it expressed BM so that your supply doesn't get messed up (i.e. not formula).

And don't consider this "your fault." You tried what you could!
