Pediatrician in the city or burbs? Sorry - a little long.

Hi there!

My husband and I just bought a house in Hinsdale (currently living in the city).  We're delivering at Prentice, and we are trying to start researching a pediatrician.  We've received a couple of recommendations - and we'll start the process of interviewing them.

Here's where my question comes in.  I've received one recommendation for a pediatrician in the city - Dr. Cari Tarnowski at Child & Adolescence on Clark.  I've been told they're the best, and have admitting rights to Children's Memorial Hospital.  Obviously we don't know yet, but we're worried our baby will have some health problems (my husband has serious allergies and asthma problems that he's inherited from his Dad).  I like that this Ped has admitting rights to CMH, but since we will be in Hinsdale, and both of us will be working full time, I feel like we might need someone closer to home?

The other two recommendations we've received are closer - dr Mary Lewis and associates and dupage pediatrics- dr hall.  I guess I'm torn b/c I REALLY like the admitting rights to CMH, but I'm not sure we can handle the commute if we need to go in often.  Does anyone have any advice?  Has anyone worked with any of these Pediatricians?

TIA for your time and advice!  :)

  • i would meet with whomever and trust your gut with which to choose. we live in the city but work in the burbs, but in different directions from home. for us, we chose a pedi near our home. and he's amazing and wonderful and spot on awesome. there haven't been any health issues so any time there's an appointment, we both just take the day off work and have a family day together. it's worked our wonderfully well so far.

    good luck.

  • We switched to Dr. Lewis after our 2nd daughter.  We LOVE all the doctors.  We never wait, they are very thorough and wonderful!

  • I would pick a doctor closer to your home or daycare. We've had timed where DS needed to be seen before daycare or right after. And if I had to bring DS in to the doctor in the city and then back home after just being there that would be huge waste of time. Or if you have well visits you try and schedule around work you would loose half of day if not an entire day. Your time off is precious when you have a baby so adding those commute times to an appointment adds up. That's just my two cents.

  • We have been going to Hinsdale Pediatrics since DD was born.  We currently see Dr. Franco (the pedi we had before moved out of town).  She is great and there are about 7 doctors in the practice.  DD and DS have been hospitalized a couple times for dehydration and bronchiolitis and the pediatrics unit at Hinsdale Hospital is great too.

I recommend having your pedi close to home/the kids daycare, etc. vs. the city.  I used to work in the city with the kids in the burbs and the commute wasted a lot of time when I needed a last minute appointment.
