C-sections

Pregnancy right after c-section

What happens if you get pregnant right after having a c-section? Like 6 or 8 weeks after? I know they say your suppose to wait like 18 months and I def. have no plans of getting pregnant. What will the doctors do? I am 9 weeks pp and still haven't started my period so it just got me thinking! Scary....

Re: Pregnancy right after c-section

  • are you breast feeding? that could be the reason AF hasn't arrived yet. I was told that if a woman nurses 6-8 times a day she doesn't ovualate and therefore doesn't get her period. Hence some woman who breast feed don't use any kind of birth control.

  • Okay, now you have me worried, too! heh!

So, the day before my c-section, we decided to try to induce labor with....intercourse. Well, that got me thinking. Is it possible to get pregnant from doing that? ha! I was actually too embarrassed to ask the doctor. But you know how sperm can live in there for a couple of days.....that's what made me wonder. But, I really really doubt that my uterus would ever accept a pregnancy that quickly and I surely doubt there would already be an egg released.

     But it made me ponder.

  • PP you have to ovulate to get pg. You don't ovulate while you're pg so your labor inducing session would not get you pg. I got pg 4 months after my first c/s. It was hard on my body. my dr was very excited. This time she said to make sure that we wait at least 6m. We're waiting longer to make sure I'm totally healed

  • My OB told me to wait six months. I don't think they'd *do* anything, it'll just be hard on your body. Also, I haven't really looked into VBAC, but if you wanted to go that route, a pregnancy soon after c-section might mess that up? I'm not sure.

  • After a c-section it is advised to wait at least a year for proper healing and to reduce the chance of uterine rupture with a subsequent pregnancy.

It is a recommendation for safety, not the law. Many women get pregnant right away and turn out just fine.  I am a NP and will be waiting the year if I decide to try to have another.

Also, You CAN get pregnant while breastfeeding without a period!! So use protection if you do not want to get pregnant.

I still don't have my period 9 months PP due to breastfeeding, but you CAN get pregnant.  Don't rely on bfing as birth control!

  • My OB said that you should have ~1 yr b/w deliveries with a c-section.  By that thinking, you can get pregnant at ~12 wks and delivery would be at ~1 yr mark.  I think that number though is variable amongst OB's.

I know a couple of people said this but I want to highlight this-- You can get pregnant while breastfeeding.  Breastfeeding is not a form of birth control.

Actually BFing is a very reliable form of birth control for the first 6 months PP if you have not had your period yet. It is just as reliable as most other methods.

Um, no it's not.  And if it is then please explain that to my Mom, who was BFing and never got her period between pgs.  My brother & 2 sisters are all born a year apart in the same week in Feb.

BFing is NOT birth control and if you think otherwise ask your doctor, not wikipedia.

Actually, no, it is NOT a form of birth control. The nurses and doctors at the hospital and my OB office both advise against using BF'ing as birth control because it simply does not work.

    Also.  Wikipedia is a joke.

I don't think wikipedia is a very reliable source of information.

You are right. Wikipedia isn't the best. I got my information from TCOYF and The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding, but it's hard to link a chapter from a book. And for those who said, I know so and so who got PG BFing, I can tell you people who got PG on hormonal BC, using diaphragms and condoms, etc. The only 100% reliable form of BC is abstinence.

I do not go to my doctors for 100% of my information. They didn't consider FAM to be a reliable form of BC, but I avoided pregnancy for over two years with it and got PG on the first cycle we tried for both pregnancies. So doctors don't know everything.

    Is this a better source?

Sorry hun, but I think you're probably pregnant. Whatever you do, don't go to the doctor about it. I read on Wikipedia that they'll force you to have an abortion.

  • Um, if you open your mind a little......I said, I doubt my body would be releasing an egg that quickly! But....it has happened, though rarely,(but it would seem easier to happen at the end of pregnancy when your body is changing again) so that is what worried me a bit!

  • Although they do not advise it for the reasons previously discussed, I had two C-Sections, 12 months apart and everything went flawlessly.

This.  Both DD's were nursed for over a year and with each my first post-pg period came when they were about 13/14 months old.

  • I got pregnant with DS2 wen DS1 was 8 months old. Everything was fine. Doctor wanted me to wait until 9 months after first baby, but who knew it would happen the first time we tried again?

I just wanted to say that you CAN get pregnant while BFing. Do not let anyone suggest to you that you can't. I exclusively breastfed both DS1 and DS2 - got my period at exactly 8 weeks after both c-sections. DS3 is only 4 weeks old, but my guess is that I will get my period soon again even though I am exclusively BFing him. If you don't want to get pregnant again soon, do something for birth control or don't have sex......BFing may not stop you from ovulating.

  • My doc told me a few months later is was fine to start trying again if we wanted to. So I think others are just being cautious.  I also could resume sex after 4 weeks after my c-section.  I think it took me three months to start my period after my section and I was breastfeeding.
  • I think my OB said to wait 3 months.  I got pg at 5 months.  My deliveries were about 13 1/2 months apart.  I went 41w the first time w/ not a sign of labor.  Second time I went into labor at 37w and I honestly think having the pregnancies so close together had something to do w/ it.

I did a lot of reading and the answer to this question were so different w/ lots of threats of uterine rupture.  Every OB seems to have a different opinion.
