Seeking help for DS's speech

I will start by saying that he is going to start working with an SLP again this week, twice a week. But I want more. I want to help him as much as possible at home. So far I have a word of the day chart with corresponds with his sound of the day chart. I want an activity for him to do everyday. So far he has used dot markers to fill in a giant letter, or we cut pictures of things that all start with the same sound out of a magazine to glue onto paper.

Do they make specific speech workbooks? Or have you seen online printables? My son responds very well to worksheets/written work that we can do together. I would love some ideas.

Re: Seeking help for DS's speech

  • Tell your SLP that, she should be able to give you lots of "homework".  My son gets "homework" just about every session, but it is specific to him.

When he was 3-4 he got a short book every week that focused on a specific sound (Spider, Spider Where Can You Be for SP) maybe you could google that.  Also bingo style cards with target words.  Cut and paste sheets with target words too.  I know the SLP had workbooks that she got this stuff from, so maybe a teacher's store?  But first I would see if she can just give you some things every week.

  • I'm a speech therapist and will try to help, but I need to know what his deficits are:

    speech/articulation?

grammar? vocabulary? social part of language? language and play?

    comprehension? not talking?

PM if you want or reply here and I will see if I can offer up any info

  • Starfall is a great website that does phonics stuff.  My DD"s speech class uses this as part of class.  One note - make sure that whatever you are doing is fun.  While I 100% get the need to want to work with your child, you don't want to make it seem to much like work or they will push back and not want to do it.  My 5 year odl has speech 3x's a week and we have to be very careful.  2x a week she has a 90 min speech preschool with 7 other kids and then we have just added a private speech session for 30 mins a week that is one on one.  When we work with my DD during the week, we don't have her sit down and do things, we keep it as part of whatever we are doing - make it just part of the routine of life.
