NBR: Kindle vs Nook

I've been wanting a kindle or a nook for a long time and finally decided to buy one this weekend.  I'm stuck on which one is better.  If you have one, what do you like about it/not like about it.

Re: NBR: Kindle vs Nook

  • I have a Nook. Love it. The main reason I went with it was because I can download books from public libraries (Kindle's interface doesn't allow you to do it legally). Otherwise, they are pretty comparable, though I've heard that the battery lasts longer on the Kindle.

  • kindle owner here, a x-mas gift from my parents after i borrowed my mom's and loved it.

i love my kindle. i read mostly novels, so the fact that the kindle is not in color dosen't bother me. i don't play any games on it or use it for the internet (other than to upload books) but i think it has the capabilities.

you can now borrow books on the kindle now, however i haven't done so. i've also noticed the price of the books on amazon has gone up, or at least seem to be not as cheap as they used to be (i acutally saw a book that was actually cheaper as a new softcover then a kindle download which i thought was pretty crappy) i don't follow the prices on B & N books for the nook so that might be something to look into. but there are still places (even on amazon) to get free books- not the latest bestsellers obviously, but there are free ones out there, and guides to them. again i do not know if free books are available for the nook

one of the techincal differences that i know is a huge difference in the two is the screen. the kindle is backlit so you can read it in bright sunshine!

you might also want to wander to the book board on the nest for more info i think this question is asked weekly over there

oh and as for the battery i hear the kindle last longer too, mine last's forever but i keep the wireless off unless i'm adding books to it.

  • I have a Nook, and I love it... but I have nothing to compare it to.

If I were you, I'd get the Nook Color!

  • I have the Kindle as well and love it. My only concern with the Nook is that Barnes and Noble are most likely next to go under :( So down the road if something happens to it you probably won't be able to get it fixed.

  • I have a Nook, and also got it because I could download books from the library. Love it, and it's way cheaper than having to buy books on the Kindle.
  • I have a Kindle and love it.  Love how easy the screen is to read - even in bright sun.  It's easy to operate and the battery lasts forever on it.  And I'm an Amazon junkie so for me it's the easiest way to get books.

  • I've heard the Kindle is better than the Nook.
  • I have a Nook and my father has a Kindle and we constantly discuss which one is better. IMO, they both do the same thing and are roughly the same price. I got a Nook because I'm a big B&N fan, they give you free books and stuff when you bring it into the store over the summer, and B&N.com routinely offers different, free books. I didn't bother with the colored Nook, I think its pointless unless you're using it to read magazines or childrens books. That being said, I still think that the Nook is better. The reason why I think this, is mainly because the Kindle has a built in keyboard and the Nook has the scrolling touch screen. I like the touch screen more because I very rarely, if ever, use the keyboard and I think it's a waste of space. When you need to use the keyboard on the Nook, you touch some buttons and it becomes a touch screen keyboard. The area where the touch screen is stays in color so the different sections of the nook have different colors and you can see the covers of your books in color. But either way, you can't go wrong.

  • I have a Nook Color and love it.  I read a lot on it, but also like the Apps I can get and that I can surf the web and check email on it.

DH got me this SD card that he put into the Nook that turned it into an Android too, which has been pretty cool.

The only downside for me to the Nook Color is that it is not good for reading outside.  You can't see the screen.  But DH has one of the cheap Nooks, so I can always use his if I really wanted to read outside.

  • I have the Nook Color and LOVE it! I looked at them both and the Nook was nicer and had more features I would use than the kindle. I don't think B&N is going anywhere as they have a huge handle on the digital world. I like that I could take it to any Best Buy or B&N if I have any problems....which I haven't. R loves it too, we have several interactive kids books on it.
