What did you get and why? Please also include your planned sleeping arrangements (bed sharing, bassinet in your room, or nursery) if that factored into your decision.

Someone got us a Motorla one but we are returning it since we don't want a monitor. It has good reviews and a color monitor (many are black and white) so if we were in the market for one, I'd keep it. You can also hook up extra cameras around your property, so it's like a monitor/security camera all in one.

Baby will sleep with us for the first 6 weeks or so, and then go into her own room, just across the hall.

Our family room is a fair distance away from the bedrooms, so we intend to keep the large screen in there, and then the small handheld screen where ever else we may be in the house.

We will be cosleeping at night for the first couple months with baby in the cosleeper in the crib during the day. We got something like this:

I don't feel like I need a video monitor, we never had issues with E waking up when we went to check on him as a baby. And from what I have heard from people IRL who had the alarm monitor, its a PITA and not worth it. My brother was on an actual SIDS monitor and my mom said it didn't give her peace of mind, so I don't think the alarm would make me any less "nervous" than I already am.

We got the Phillips AVENT DECT Baby Monitor with Temperature Sensor. We get a lot of interference from the neighboring houses, which is why my DH ultimately decided to go with this monitor. We have remotes on all of our ceiling fans, and found that our next door neighbor had the same remotes and was actually turning our fans and lights on and off. We even made sure we were on different frequencies, but that didn't seem to help. We eventually had to buy specific frequency fan and light remotes to stop the lights from turning on and off at 3am. Let me tell you, those were not fun months! So, we didn't even want to chance having an issue since our neighbor next door and behind us both just recently had babies. The monitor we chose said that we shouldn't have any frequency interference issues. Let's just hope they are right!

I got it off of craigslist for 100.00, so half the price. I hooked it up and it works perfect! I didn't think I wanted the video at first, but w/the decent price on it and the idea that I can roll over and see him is comforting. His room is very close to ours, but it will be nice for even just putting up in the living room etc when he is crawling or whatever. It is portable and will be great for traveling. Also, if I go outside when he is napping, I can just see what he is doing.

You can shut the video off and only have audio if you want as well and the night vision is great too!

We have the Summer Infant Day and Night video monitor. It is color and works well. We have used it since DD was born and have been able to add another camera that picks up on the other channel for DS. I only used the sound portion for the first few weeks after DD was born (she is right across the hall so hearing her isn't a problem) but I like to be able to see what she is doing. Sometimes she cries in her sleep without waking up or when she wakes up she plays quietly in her crib so I wouldn't know she is awake without looking.

I should also add that when she was very little and I was still super paranoid I could see her breathing on the monitor if I looked closely, which I did frequently.

I registered for and got the Angelcare movement/sound monitor. She will be sleeping in a bassinet in our room for a while and then transition to her crib in the nursery later. I think I will sleep a little sounder knowing that I don't have to constantly check to see if she is still breathing! lol

We have this monitor as well. He will be in the PnP in our room for the first 6 ish weeks and then going in his nursery which is right above our bedroom.

We're not getting a monitor unless we decide we need one later. We live in a small house, most of the time is spent on the main floor which is around 1k sq feet. Her bedroom is about 10 feet from ours so we aren't seeing much of a need for it yet.

We got the Summer Infant complete coverage digital video monitor (whoa what a mouthful). It has a colour LCD screen and a separate handheld device with a colour screen. It has great picture and sound quality.

We decided on the video monitor mostly because we are planning to have him in his crib from day 1. His room is right next to ours so we will be able to hear him easily, but we think the video will save us from having to get up out of bed to check on him every time we hear something. We will just be able to glance over at the screen and decide whether it's necessary to get up. Although we wouldn't have far to go to physically check on him, I think it will be nice to be able to stay horizontal in our warm bed as much as possible.

We thought it was the best of both worlds - we can still see LO so it's almost like him being in our bedroom, and we won't have to worry about possible crib transition issues later on.

Same goes for naptimes and when he gets a little older. When he wakes up, we'll be able to see whether he really needs us or if he's content to just hang out and play in his crib.

This is almost exactly us/our line of thinking. Except sub in "Summer Infant Day and Night Handheld Color Video Monitor"

DS1 was in his crib from day one (besides intermittent spells of bed sharing during growth spurts, wakfeul periods, etc.) We have the SonyCall baby monitor and have never had a problem with interference or anything... it's been great. We plan to move it into DS2's room when he arrives. DS1 rarely wakes at night anymore and his room is right next to ours so we'd be able to hear him anyway.

We have the Angelcare too. We used it for DD and will use it for DS. It gave my DH and I the peace of mind we needed!! The only false alarms we had were due to user error (the ceiling fan on high or the sensor too low on the mattress). Definitely worth every penny!!

I didn't want a video monitor. If we change our minds and decide we want a video monitor, we'll just take the Sony one up to the house we spend the weekends at in the summer.

We got this one as well as it came highly recommended by my sister.

We didn't want a video moniter after SIL realized that her neighbor a few houses away (who liked to walk around naked) had the same video moniter as her and so the signals were the same. Now THAT was a shock for her when she went to check it to see her DD and saw her naked neighbor!

We got a Summer Infant color video monitor. We are planning on the baby sleeping in our room for the first few weeks (6ish) and then using the monitor after that in the nursery. I was also thinking about buying one of the old monitors (like just a sound one) to use when we travel to my parents.

Originally we had just gotten a Sony Babycall for DS and it was fine but my mom got us a Summer Infant Slim and Secure as a gift. Now I can't imagine not having a video monitor, especially since the spare rooms are on the other end of the house from the master suite. We just purchased the extra camera. Of all of the "convenience" items we have, this one is at the top. Like pp's said, sometimes they will cry or whine in their sleep...I'd rather not have to walk all the way across my house to find that out and then risk waking DS up checking on him.

We got some crazy Samsung color video, temperature-reading, Skype-capable contraption (this is what happens when you let your technology obsessed SO pick out items for baby). LO will sleep in our room for the first couple months but I plan on having him nap in his room down the hall during the day.

It's called the SecureVIEW and it is what we got as well. From what I have researched Samsung has just recently gotten into the baby monitor business, but it has gotten really good reviews. We wanted a high quality video monitor because our bedroom is downstairs and LO will be upstairs, so I wanted to avoid as many pointless trips up and down the stairs as possible. For just a little bit more we bought the one that you can SKYPE into so my husband can skype in from work, or my mom from the DFW area. However, the monitor has to be plugged into the computer to do this... so you will always know if/when someone is skyping in on your child! I'm super excited about it!

This is the monitor we got. I read that it is recommended you get some kind of board to put under the movement sensor. Do you have a board under yours? We will be using a co-sleeper at first, but want to be safe and use it even then.
