Trying to Get Pregnant

Do I try to lose weight now or wait until after DD#2?

I mentioned below that DH are trying to decide if we want another LO. Right now, I weigh about 15 lbs more than I would like. If we do decide to go forward and have another one, should I try to lose my weight now BEFORE trying to conceive or just wait until after LO#2 is born? Every time I think about trying to lose weight, I always think "Well, if I get pregnant again in the near future, it will have all been for nothing..." What do you think?  I know that eating healthier and exercising is something I should do anyway, but as far as being really conscious about losing weight, I'm not sure if I want to do that yet.

  • I'm on the waiting to be done having babies to lose weight plan.  I know it might not happen again, but I'm not terribly obese, so I don't think its affecting my health or ability to get pg, so I'm not worried about it at this point.

I'm the exact opposite.  I'm not at all overweight but I lost about 15lbs last year and continue to eat healthy and exercise to keep my body in optimum shape for pregnancy.  I'm also hoping that by losing the weight prior to getting pg it'll be easier to lose the weight and get back in shape after.

  • I don't see any reason why you can't start working on losing the weight while TTC.  As long as you are losing the weight in a healthy manor it won't affect your ability to get pregnant, so just start eating right now and working out.  If you start now and keep it up through the pregnancy you will have much less to worry about after baby #2 arrives.

You have some great points!  I just need to get motivated!  Especially since we're not really sure when we'll TTC again. Big Smile

  • From what I hear it is a lot harder to lose weight after having a baby/babies.

Think of it this way you will end up having to lose more at once in the future if you don't start now. If you lost 15 pound now and gain let say 30 during pregnancy, you would only have to lose another 15 pounds to be where you are now.

Does that make sense? Probably not, but it made sense in my head.

I am losing weight while TTC. Doing both at the same time has not been an issue for me.

Same. Also my secretary was allowed (Dr's permission) to keep losing weight after getting pregnant with her second, and it made her delivery easier (she was in no way "skinny") and then she only had 10 to lose after having the baby.

  • I'd say start now.. it's not going to hurt anything and will make you healthier. Not to mention you never know when your going to actually get pregnant. I'd rather feel good about myself and be healthy and if I get ended up pregnant then I'd consider it a head start to a healthy pregnancy.

I know this isn't the board I'm supposed to be on, I just like reading and never comment, but if I could put my 2 cents in, I would rather have lost weight before being pregnant this time rather than waiting until after. I started this pregnancy 20 lb's heavier than I started my pregnancy with DS, and it's made a huge difference. Sciatic pain has been terrible because my core muscles are so weak, and the extra fat in my abdomen was pushed up along with organs, further compressing everything, so I've been experiencing the worst indigestion and acid reflux, which I never had with DS. Also, my lungs have been more compressed than with DS (who carried high, whereas this baby is low!) so that's been an issue too.

I know every woman is different, as well as each pregnancy, but if I could choose when to get pregnant next time, I'd definitely want to wait until I lost the weight.

    Hope this helps! :)

  • I'm trying to loose weight while TTC our second child too. I was going to try and wait till I got down to my goal weight before trying, but figure I would be much happier trying for baby number 2 now and hope to loose a little bit more weight on the way. Good luck!

  • I know a few ladies who were on the "I'll lose the weight when I'm done having kids" plan, and they ended up never really doing so for some reason - at least never got back to their pre-preggo body.  Whereas my friends who got right back in shape after each kid seemed to have a much easier time.
