Another Insulin Question: what if you forget - take it late?

Okay...I ran out of the house this morning for an appointment.  I grabbed a breakfast I could eat on the way.  I forgot to take my insulin before running out the door and didn't have my pen with me.  I got home about 1 hour later (so about 1 hour after eating).  I tested my sugars and I was a little high.  Do you still take your insulin or write it off as a forgotten dose and pick up on the next one?  I had no idea what I should do!

Re: Another Insulin Question: what if you forget - take it late?

  • How long until you eat again? When determining your insulin dose, is there a correction in there? Like for every 10 points your sugar is over a specific number do you take a certain number of extra units? How high was your BG when you tested when you got home? If it wasn't too bad and your insulin dose includes a correction, I would wait until your next meal.

  • I asked my endo about this after forgetting a few times. She told me: If you remember within a few bites of starting your meal, take it. If you forget completely, just skip it. Your BS may be a little high, but taking the insulin too late could just cause a crash.

Make sure to ask your doctor specifically though -  the type of insulin you are on could affect their answer. I'm on Humalog with meals, and they don't want me to take unless I will be eating within 15 minutes to avoid lows.

  • Thanks, ladies!  I don't have a correction in my dosage if my blood sugar is high.  I'm on humalog as well.  I'll have to ask my doctor at my appointment next week.  I was a 144 just after one hour.  I was told I could check myself at the 2 hour if I was late on the one hour and if I was below 120, I'm still in range.  I was a 105 at the 2 hour, so I think it was okay.

I'll have to add this my list of questions that I bring to each appointment.  I just started writing things down so I would remember them because I go blank if I try and remember them once I get to the appointment and I always have questions!!
