Someone posted a review of their trip to Lancaster PA & it inspired me to consider it for our vacation this year. What we wanted was a close-by, non-beach vacation that would be relaxing & affordable. Lancaster fit the bill! We rented a cottage that had fun roads to bike on, a path to walk around the farm and a large yard so that we could do something in the AM before Sprout's nap. When he woke up, we'd head out & return for his PM nap. It worked really well & we plan to go back as it's so close that it's really perfect for a long weekend getaway. Plus, there are several things that we didn't have time for. Here's what we did:
Thursday: Drive up at 9am so Sprout can nap in the car. Get there around 11:30, go to visitor's center & grab lunch. Next head over to Bird-in-Hand where there are just a few shops. We purchase a quart basket of the most amazing peaches & tomatoes for $4. Total. Also purchased the potentially best whoopie pie i've ever tasted. It was chocolate peanut butter with the filling being the "peanut butter." It was definitely fluffy icing-ish, but ZOMG, it tasted like peanuts with the shell on. Heaven. Went to the grocery store to pick up on supplies & then headed over to the cottage we were renting: https://www.laurelinnthehollow.com/cottage.htm.
The place was really
nice & was situated in a rural "neighborhood" so that in between houses
there were bits of forest & streams & such. Plus, they have a huge
"yard" with a gazebo which we didn't take advantage of, but would be
lovely to eat dinner alfresco or have older kids play in. They have
sheep across the street that we took Sprout to visited several times.
Friday: In the AM walk a trail around the farm. Sprout naps. Go to
Intercourse (worst name ever for a town) & visit shops. Buy amazingly
good hot & spicy beef jerky, bread & butter jalapenos and some assorted
pickles/jams we haven't opened yet. Also bought Sprout the most adorable
wooden puppy pull toy. He was pulling that damn thing all around the
cottage for the rest of the trip! Looked around & ate lunch at Kling
Restaurant. The turkey sandwich was beyond, I tell you! Next go to
Lancaster City. Look around. Get awesome meat for cheap for dinner at Central
Market. Go home, Sprout naps. We take a walk before dinner
around the place.
Saturday: Go biking in the AM. Sprout naps. Go to Strasburg & have
mediocre pizza for lunch & then continue on to Cherry Crest Adventure
Farm: https://www.cherrycrestfarm.com/. I was highly skeptical that this
place would be any fun at all, but we had a coupon & the family that
owns the cottage recommended it for Sprout & us. We really had the best
time! There was a petting zoo with lambs and little baby chicks and
goats & ducks & so much cuteness. Watching Sprout squeal everytime he pet
the animals was so adorable. he even got to hold a chick! Also had one
of those really tall slides that hubz went on with Sprout and I took him
on this little wagon ride. There was also a play ground he loved. For
adults, there was faster slides and some other activities but the "main"
event was the corn maze. It's 5 acres! We did a cheater version where
you just ask someone how to get out b/c we knew Sprout wouldn't last very
long. But it would have been really fun to try to figure it out. Maybe
next time!
Sunday: Go biking in the AM. Sprout naps. Head over to Strasburg
Railroad (https://www.strasburgrailroad.com/) and take 45 minute train
ride. It's a *real* steam engine, like big puffs of black smoke & coal
& that white smoke that shoots out when it stops & everything. Really
fun. They apparently have wine & cheese events that would probably be
good too. Go back to Strasburg & eat yummy sandwiches/share ice cream
at the Country Store. Drive around to see covered bridges and then head
back for Sprout's nap.
Monday. Check out at 10:30 (after Sprout's nap). Go back to Intercourse
& buy an entire pound of hot & spicy jerky. It was that good, y'all.
Next, go to Sonic for lunch and be reminded how much I wish we had one
closer to us. Nom nom nom. Head home.
Re: Our Lancaster PA trip: A Review
this is on our list!
living in this area is just so awesome b/c there are so many different types of places to go in less than a 4hr drive, ya know? beaches, mountains, farmland, wineries, cities! i still can't believe that we could drive 2.5 hrs & be in the middle of cornfields & amish buggies.
I was shocked at how close it was last year. We've even gone up for just an overnight trip when we need to get away.
How fun! I never would have considered Lancaster for a trip but it sounds like you had a blast.
(P.S. I think you accidentally slipped and mentioned Sprout's real name . . . might want to go back and edit if you're worried about privacy.)

thank you!
Great review! I think I'm the one who did the Lancaster review this spring...I was also surprised at what a perfect getaway it is with small kids.
And now I have some new places to try when we go back!
