Thoughts on restarting Zumba ladies?

I've seen post titles with this before but I never opened them so apologies in advance.

I used to go a lot in the spring but I haven't gone all summer. It's starting up again tomorrow night and I'd like to go - thoughts? I emailed the instructor to get her thoughts...I'm thinking if I keep it low impact I should be ok. I'm between doctors so I can't ask them.

I just feel so crappy and need to get moving again.

  • I use to do Zumba a lot too and I miss it.  I have heard and read that as long as you modify then you will be fine.  To me, it just wasn't worth it to start it up again since there is so much modifying that needs to be done.

  • My instructor suggested just keeping it as a dance class with no jumps or anything. I am having a hard time keeping my heart rate in the preferred zone, though.

  • I have only done zumba twice, but the first time was taught by a very pregnant instructor.

  • I say if you are up for it, go for it. I have been doing zumba pre-pregnancy and have kept going since, and I do just keep it low impact, both my doctor and midwife have said to just do what I can, if you are getting too tired/out of breath take a break and slow down and not to worry about your heart rate as long as you feel ok. Just listen to your body :) If you do go back, enjoy it!

  • I have Zumba DVDs that I've been doing. They're fun and if I look dumb, that's ok cuz I'm at home! Haha... I asked my Dr. if I could keep doing it and he said yes! just slow it down, keep it low impact, but stay active! It's alot of fun if my husband doesn't watch me! My new rule is every time he giggles at me, he has to do 20 push ups!! Big Smile

  • I just started going back and I'm SO happy. My doc said that if I did it before, keep doing it. She didn't even seem concerned about modifying, as long as I continue to feel good while I'm doing it. The first class felt great - and those happy endorphins just have to be good for LO!

  • My friend was a Zumba Instructor and worked up until 5 months I think. I'm still doing it, but just adjusting it and not doing as much. I will be going back straight after baby is born though to lose the baby weight :) I think its brilliant

  • I stopped going at about 6-7 weeks I think. I felt like there was too much modifying to do. I miss it though and will be going back next spring!

  • I'll be starting back up after I hit 12wks. I want to stay somewhat in shape and not gain TOO much (shooting for a 25lb gain but I've already gained about 8lbs)

  • I've continued to go - I don't jump as high (a mental thing... I'm sure it's fine since I was doing it before).  I try to keep things a little lower than normal to try to keep my heart rate from going sky high.

  • I've continued going, it's fine.  As long as I can still hold a conversation, I consider myself ok.  I've only modified by keeping my feet closer together vs. taking wider steps.  It also depends on the teacher.  My usual Sat teacher is easy to modify w/o feeling like I'm missing a lot.  I went to another class that I haven't been to in awhile yesterday and she kicked my butt.  I left early, 50 mins was enough for me.
